Being an earthquake country like Japan, New Zealand has a particular seismic design method for concrete buildings, called the capacity design method, in which the mode of failure mechanism and location of yield hinges are first assumed. Hinge sections are designed for elastic moment under the design seismic loading, and other portions of the structure are designed for the ultimate strength of yield hinges. In this article the basic principles of the capacity design method, design seismic loading in the loadings code, ultimate lateral capacity of an actual frame building are reviewed, and some scenes at constuction sites are introduced.

Industrial robots have been being utilized in manufacturing industries for improving productivity and quality of working life of field workers. The main usage of robots are material handling, welding, painting and so forth.
Increasing productivity in constructing industry has mainly been accomplished by mechanization in the past. By introducing industrial robots we can expand the possibility of automatization down to previously impossible field.
As an example of the robotization research in constructing industry the authors introduce the outline of“A robotization model desingn research project of reinforced concrete building constructing forms handling and assembly operations”which is sponsored by Japan Industrial Robot Association and executed at System Science Institute, Waseda University.

Ultrasonic inspection method has been recently developed to be applicable to gas pressure welding of reinforcing bars. The practicability of this method was tested in such a way at several construction sites as to apply to over 16000 points of pressure welded bars. And for 370 pressure welded points, both ultrasonic inspection and tension tests were performed. The results are encouraging and it can be concluded that the ultrasonic inspection is very useful not only to find out defect of bars but also to grade up generally the quality of pressure welding. Personal deviation of measurements has been examined and a draft of judging criteria has been obtained

The reinforced concrete dome built on the north breakwater in Port of Wakkanai, Hokkaido, Japan, is the world's unprecedented harbor structure having a waterbreaking function and a passageway. The dome, supported with circular columns, also has boasted of its aesthetic structure. However, over 40 years since its completion in 1936, cracks, separation, and falling-off of its concrete, and corrosion of its steel reinforcement, have developed and to cope with such defects, partial repairs have been performed. However, because of its markedly progressing aging, a measure was taken to prohibit the traffic on its passageway since 1976. In recent years, along with the increased necessity for ferry-boat passengers to use the passageway, studies have been made as to how the dome should be renovated and over a period of 3 years from 1978 its demolition and renovation were carried out. This paper reports the outlines of the various investigations conducted prior to starting the works, and the design and works of the new dome.
