The failure mechanism of reinforced concrete slabs is much more difficult to understand than that of reinforced concrete beams because slabs are highly redundant three-dimensional complex structures. A brief review is made here on the recent studies on how to analyze the mechanism of punching failure, on the affecting factors to punching failure, and on the methods to predict the shear strength of reinforced concrete slabs when there is no shear reinforcement nor moment transfer in the region of the partially concentrated load. A brief comparative survey of code provisions on punching strength in several countries is also given here.

Maglev system in use of superconductive magnetically levitated, linear synchronous motor propelled experimental vehicle is now under development by JNR. This system will be a new erra's symbol for higher speed inter-city transportation after Sinkansen. This paper is for civil engineers and is described on the image, theory, development process, facilities and construction of Miyazaki Test Track, past and present of the experiment and view of the system.

Recently, significant deterioration of concrete surface and corrosion of reinforcing bars have been observed, and the necessity for the structural evaluation of such bridges becomes urgent for safety considerations. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the structural performance of two deteriorated reinforced concrete bridges and isolated test beams cut out of the same bridges at the time of replacement. Field and bending tests were conducted from which the strength of existing bridges and isolated beams was observed. Correlations of the values of strength obtained from these two tests give important data to be used for evaluation of existing deteriorated bridges. From the results of general investigations, field tests and bending tests, the following conclusions are drawn; 1) From the results of field tests of Nakama Bridge, strains of reinforcing bars and deflections are rather close to Theory II (uncracked cross section), whereas those of Yaka Bridge are located between Theory I (cracked section) and II. This indicates the varying effects of deterioration on main beams. 2) Beams in bending tests yield larger strains and deflections compared with those from tests. 3) According to general investigations, these two bridges were highly deteriorated in appearance. However, ultimate strength of test beams is higher than that computed by ACI Code, indicating no significant losses of strength.

'Cast-in-place concrete lining method' is one of the Shield tunnel construction method. By this method, the shield machine is drived by the reaction due to pressing the cast-in-place fresh concrete at high pressure. This method has many advantages, the settlement of ground is extremely little, the process of work is shortened, the lining is constructed economically and high quality, and etc. This paper describes the introduction of 'Cast-in-place concrete lining method', the character of pressed concrete and the abstract of experimental construction.
