The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, with a center span of 1990 m, will be the world's longest suspension bridge when it will be completed in 1998. The two main tower foundations (2 P, 3 P) were constructed in deep water by laying-down caisson method. A total volume of about 500000m
3 of underwater concrete (antiwashout underwater concrete) had been placed. Since this antiwashout underwater concrete had to be placed over a wide area and placed about 10000 m
3 per one pour under sever condition, very strict quality standards of concrete had to be applied. This report describes the results of construction.
