    The strength and ductility of concrete are increased by the lateral pressure developed by transverse reinforcements. The concrete under such a condition is referred to as confined concrete. The augumentation of strength and ductility of concrete brings an enhancement of ultimate moment and rotational capacities of plastic hinges developed in reinforced concrete columns and beams, which results in improvement of energy absorption capacity of reinforced concrete structures. A review of investigations on the confined concrete is described in this paper. The emphasis will be placed on the quantitative evaluation of the strength and deformation capacity of the confined concrete.

  • The Sydney Harbour Tunnel

    The Sydney Harbour Tunnel, the first undersea road tunnel in Australia, has been constructed by a joint venture involving Kumagai Gumi and an Australian construction firm and opened on 31st of August 1992. As the Project has been undertaken in a particularly environmentally sensitive location, a wide range of special measures was taken to minimise environmental impact. In addition, new techniques have been employed for the immersed tube tunnel construction, such as a long ocean towing of tunnel units, a flexible final joint, etc. This report addresses the outline of the Project including the unique techniques employed.

  • Great reduction of plywood consumption by precast concrete forms

    Built-in-place plywood forms made of wood from rain forests, widely used for RC (reinforced concrete) and SRC (steel framed reinforced concrete) construction in Japan, need to be innovated because of the issues of tropical deforestation and the shortage of skillful formworkers. To meet these needs, we applied a precast concrete form method to a medium scale SRC building construction. In this method, thin precast concrete panels and units serve as stay-in-place forms for structural elements such as columns, girders, beams and walls. With this method, the quantity of plywood used in this building was reduced to only 3% of the ordinary plywood form method. The installation of these precast concrete forms was simplified, so that skillful formworkers were not required.

    The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, with a center span of 1990 m, will be the world's longest suspension bridge when it will be completed in 1998. The two main tower foundations (2 P, 3 P) were constructed in deep water by laying-down caisson method. A total volume of about 500000m3 of underwater concrete (antiwashout underwater concrete) had been placed. Since this antiwashout underwater concrete had to be placed over a wide area and placed about 10000 m3 per one pour under sever condition, very strict quality standards of concrete had to be applied. This report describes the results of construction.
