With the increase of existing buildings in Japan, the demand for building diagnosis has been increasing for the last decade. In the past it has been common to take action after problems already exist, however, now there is great anticipation for the building diagnosis to serve as preventive maintenance or facility management. In this paper, the structural diagnosis techniques for the most general reinforced concrete building are summarized on the examination items, process and points. As an example for diagnosis techniques, the field examination for reinforced concrete members and floor slab is described. The methods of durability and aseismatic diagnosis are outlined, and also the practical examples for aseismatic diagnosis utilizing the vibration test and recent non-destructive testing apparatus are presented.

It has become possible to produce large size threaded reinforcing bars such as having 57 mm, 64 mm and 70 mm diameters in Japan. Recommendations for Design and Construction of Large Size Threaded Reinforcing Bars D 57 and D 64 have been established by The Japan Society of Civil Engineers. In this paper, research and development works are reviewed focusing on mechanical and chemical qualities of D 57 and D 64, flexural cracking behaviors of concrete members reinforced with D 57 and D 64, performances of crack reducing bars, coupler joints, mechanical anchorages, and proposed steel truss frames. Some important comments in the Recommendations are also presented for rational utilization of large size threaded bars.

Underground structures such as public utility tunnels, the Tokyo monorail, an airport access road tunnel and so on, are constructed at present as the second stage of Tokyo International Airport Offshore Expansion Project. The soil is very soft and differential settlement is unavoidable after the airport is in operation because the ground was reclaimed by waste materials. Therefore, we adopted the elasto-plastic ground spring method in the design of earth retaining walls, flexible joints and so on. Moreover, at the west passenger terminal area a variety of facilities on and under the ground are being constructed by different execution agencies crossing each other on different ground levels. Design and construction of those underground structures are presented.

This paper describes the first application of permanent ground-anchorage for a highrise building. The 30 stories apartment-house has a complex architectural plan, like a flight wild geese, to reduce the influence of building shade around site. In such a case, earthquake gives strong up-lift force for column-end of specified position 1st floor and the force overtake its long term design load. Recently, permanent ground-anchorages are utilized to resist such a external force, 8 anchorages were applied to ensure the apartment-house from strong motion earthquake.
