Recently, many kinds of concretes such as high-strength-concrete, high-fluid-concrete, roller-compacted concrete and slip-formed-concrete have been used rapidly in various kinds of concrete structures. So it is necessary to make a supplying system for these concretes at ready-mixed concrete factories. Points and problems in the production of these concretes are explained.

Techniques which have been used to reduce shrinkage cracking and thermal cracking in concrete are reviewed. Though several methods to reduce cracking have been proposed in guidelines or papers, these methods are not always effective at job sites. The reasons why they are not always effective are analyzed and it is indicated that mechanisms of cracking are not fully understood yet.

A steel-concrete-steel sandwich structural design is being used for the immersed tube sections of the Kobe port Minatojima Tunnel. The first pouring works of high fluidity concrete in the main assemblies are finished. Various factors affect the quality of high fluidity concrete, and also it is impossible to confirm directly the filling and to repair the failure, pouring concrete into sandwich steel cell. For success of pouring works, we made methods about the accurate quality control and the exact logistics of concrete. This report describes the methods and results of the quality control, the logistics and the non destructive inspection with regard to the first pouring works into the sandwich steel cell.

Thinking seriously about the damage to highway bridges by the Hyogo-Ken-Nanbu earthquake of January 17, 1995, Metropolitan Expressway Public Corporation is launched on the retrofitting project to achieve the strengthening of the earthquake disaster prevention measures so that Metropolitan Expressway structures will not fall off or collapse even against enormous seismic motions of this class. The total number of bridge piers of Metropolitan Expressway, including both reinforced concrete and steel ones, is about 7,200. For all of them, the Corporation plans to examine earthquake proofness and almost complete necessary measures within the next three years. In the paper, the retrofitting design and construction by the Corporation for reinforced concrete bridge piers are described.
