“Recommendation for Practice of High-Strength Concrete” was published from the Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ) in January 2005. In 1976, AIJ published “Recommendation for Design and Practice of High-strength reinforced concrete”. In recent 25 years, the design and construction technology of high-strength concrete was remarkably improved. Also, high-strength concrete has been applied to a lot of high-rise buildings. Therefore, the former recommendation was revised in all aspects. The new recommendation comprises the criteria, standards and test methods based on the latest technologies of high-strength concrete including high-strength concrete filled tube and high-strength pre-cast concrete. This report gives an outline of this new recommendation.

Secondary lining concrete in tunnel structures have been recognized to involve problems in which several examples of concrete spalling were reported in tunnel structures. These problems were considered to arise due to initial cracking in lining concrete, which was strictly inspected at construction completion these days. Although effective technical suggestion has not reported to prevent initial cracking in lining concrete in literature, a new technical guideline is proposed by lining concrete research working group in Geo-Front committee. This proposal was based on broad field investigation for actual tunnel structures (1418 samples) in two years from 2002. Statistical investigation of these field data showed source of initial cracking occurring. This investigation finally led optimized concrete mix proportion and construction method for lining concrete structures.

Fiber Reinforced Plastics (FRP) is an excellent reinforcing material with lightweight and corrosion resistance. As one of a method to utilize these superior characteristics, FRP Sheet Adhesion method is widely used as strengthening method of existing concrete structures. However, especially in the case of applying this method for flexural strengthening of beam members, it is considered that high strength of FRP is not used effectively. Therefore, the strengthening method for concrete structures with tensioned Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) plate has been developed. This paper outlines this strengthening method. Loading test results of the viaduct strengthened by this method are also reported.

The authors proposed the seismic retrofit system without dowel anchors by the steel Brace and the RC shear wall (anchor-less seismic retrofit system). It manufactured specimens with the 1-layer 1-span by the anchor-less seismic retrofit system and specimens were tested under reversed cyclic loadings. As a result, we got the following knowledge. 1) The anchor-less seismic retrofit system frame shows stable load-displacement relationship and the maximum strength can be evaluated by the column punching shear strength. 2) By setting a ratio with column punching shear strength and steel Brace strength appropriately, it is possible to make the Brace yielding precession system by the anchor-less seismic retrofit system, too. 3) By installing a steel boundary, beam and a boundary plate in the part at the top and the bottom of the opening, RC wall with the opening can be effective in the validity as the anchor-less seismic retrofit system.
