The spatial structure and panoramic landscape characteristics of 27 named slopes in Kobe City were analyzed. The slopes were classified into seven types based on gradient, plan configuration, and cross-sectional configuration, revealing a relationship between spatial structure and landscape characteristics. While some slopes provide open panoramic views with high visibility, others characterized by bends and undulations create diverse landscapes through changes in sightlines and the appearance and disappearance of distant views. In addition, the landscapes of Kobe’s slopes are characterized not only by views of the sea but also by various landscape elements such as buildings and vegetation. Furthermore, different slope types were located in close proximity to one another, and it was clarified that the distribution of diverse slopes throughout the urban area contributes to the formation of a varied and distinctive landscape.

One of the challenges identified in promoting historic townscape preservation is the decline in the number of historic structures. Even in cities that have been certified under the Historic Townscape Preservation and Enhancement Plan, there is a trend toward a decline in historic structures. On the other hand, there are cases where local governments collaborate with citizens to undertake activities aimed at utilizing and preserving historical townscapes.
This study conducted a survey focusing on two cities engaged in the preservation of historic streetscapes. The aim was to examine the impact of differences in the history of these initiatives—specifically regarding the involvement of civic groups and local government—on the utilization and preservation activities of historical townscapes. The results revealed that while both districts are experiencing a decline in historical structures, there are differences in the duration of utilization and preservation activities, the number of private organizations involved, and the level of detail with which residents’ opinions are captured.

This study investigates how color perception in station squares is shaped by both physical color properties and cognitive factors. Preliminary surveys revealed that although achromatic colors such as gray dominate the physical environment, users often recall colors influenced by symbolic architecture, nearby tourist attractions, regional mascots, and associations derived from station names. A nationwide survey of 30 stations confirmed these four major tendencies in color‐image formation. Detailed analyses of Kanazawa and Fukui Stations showed clear discrepancies between physical color distributions and perceived colors, indicating that symbolic structures and cultural imagery strongly affect recognition. Furthermore, viewpoint-based analysis demonstrated that colors perceived at staying spots and photo taking locations significantly contribute to users’ impressions. These findings suggest that effective color planning for station squares must consider not only measurable color quantities but also symbolic elements, cultural context, and viewpoint dependent visual experiences.

Given the interaction between sound and visuals, this study focuses on the relationship between sound design in film works and the visual landscapes depicted therein, and examines the conditions that elements of urban space must satisfy for contemporary audiences to perceive them as soundscapes. Through an analysis of sound design in three film works set in Kyoto City, four spatial components and six types of soundscapes were identified. Furthermore, to understand soundscapes in relation to visual landscapes, the proposed framework was applied to methods for describing soundscapes in actual urban spaces, using the Gion-Shirakawa area of Kyoto as a case study. The results demonstrate qualitative differences in soundscapes that are difficult to grasp using conventional sound maps based solely on the distribution of sound sources and show the potential of an area-based method for describing urban soundscapes.

This study examines landscape improvement strategies during the transition period of overhead power line removal projects. It focuses on identifying factors that influence the evaluation of street landscapes, including utility poles and power lines, and explores alternatives to full undergrounding. Three physical elements-the quantity of power lines, the number of utility poles, and the height difference between poles and building skylines—were quantified. An impression evaluation experiment was conducted using 48 photomontage-based images, followed by factor analysis and multiple regression analysis. The results indicate that landscape evaluation is structured by three factors: comfort, universality, and clutter. Among these, the quantity of power lines showed a significant negative effect, reducing perceived comfort and overall preference. In contrast, complete removal of utility poles did not necessarily yield the highest evaluations, suggesting that a phased reduction of overhead power lines may be a more effective strategy.

In this study, we focused on the ways in which key actors are involved and classified terraced paddy field conservation into three types: an endogenous type driven solely by local actors, an exogenous type led by external organizations, and a co-creative type in which local communities and external organizations collaborate. Based on this classification, we conducted interviews to examine the processes of plan formulation in the target regions, the impacts after implementation, and the characteristics and activities of the organizations involved. Through this analysis, we clarified the role of the plans, as well as the trends and distinctive features of conservation activities in each type.It was clarified that, in the conservation of terraced rice fields, both the objectives of the plan and the composition of key actors influence the direction and outcomes of the activities.

This study examines the relationship population program “Hidasuke!” in Hida City, Gifu Prefecture, with the aim of clarifying the experiential values that encourage continued engagement by non-resident participants. Based on a post-participation questionnaire, the analysis compares first-time participants with repeat participants. The results show that, as participants engage repeatedly, the sense of extraordinariness associated with place, activity, and human relationships gradually weakens, suggesting that local involvement becomes part of their ordinary experience. In contrast, the value derived from difficulty—such as demanding tasks or unpredictable natural conditions—and novelty—such as seasonal differences and diverse program content—remains meaningful even for repeat participants. The study concludes that sustained engagement can be promoted by designing mechanisms that transform difficulties into achievement and deeper understanding of local activities, while also offering varied programs that provide new discoveries across different seasons and types of work.

This study focuses on sake breweries as local enterprises and examines how they utilize regional resources to create new values. Thirteen cases were collected through online news articles and analyzed based on business practices and expected outcomes. The results indicate that the cases can be classified into three types: “Spatial Reorganization,” “Spatial Utilization,” and “Soft Practice.” In particular, cases in peripheral areas were more likely to involve spatial reorganization through the use of abandoned farmland and vacant facilities. The findings suggest that sake breweries contribute to regional value creation not only through product development but also through the utilization of spatial resources and collaboration with local stakeholders.

In recent years, cycle tourism has gained increasing attention in Japan, driven by rising tourism demand and national promotion initiatives. However, individual local governments often face difficulties in securing the financial and human resources necessary to develop adequate reception environments, highlighting the need for public-private partnership. This study analyzes the current conditions of Biwaichi Cycle Support Stations and examines the perceived benefits reported by registered facilities as Cycle Support Stations in order to advance the development of cycle tourism support environments. The analysis reveals substantial variation among facilities in their recognition of benefits such as increased profits and enhanced communication opportunities resulting from registration. The findings indicate that facility type and methods of displaying registration status influence the extent to which facilities perceive positive effects. In addition, facilities that reported stronger perceived benefits exhibited a higher intention to continue their participation.

In recent years, with the decline in population and the aging of society, maintaining essential daily functions has become a challenge in remote island regions. There are concerns about disparities in convenience between central and surrounding areas as services like healthcare and shopping get concentrated in central districts. In this study, we focused on Oki Island Town, conducting a literature review and a resident survey to analyze the use of daily services like shopping, medical care, and administrative services, as well as transportation methods. The results showed that these services were concentrated in the Saigō district, and people in surrounding areas depended heavily on private cars. Based on this, we proposed support measures such as mobile sales and transportation mobility and considered what small community hubs could look like under population decline.

This study examined the creation of shade of a tree for thermal improvement during summer walking in the Sannomiya district. Specifically, the distribution of shade created by buildings and trees and the pedestrians distribution were analyzed between 12:30 and 14:30, when thermal conditions are most severe. Using a 3D city model, the shade distribution and pedestrian distribution were identified and overlaid to determine streets with the highest priority for thermal improvement through additional shade of a tree. The results showed that the northern side of Sannomiya Chuo-dori, as well as the eastern sides of the northern sections of Koikawa-suji and Zeikan-sen, had the highest priority for thermal improvement. Furthermore, providing continuous shade connected to the arcade of Sannomiya Chuo-dori and introducing shade of a tree that enhances the continuity of Koikawa-suji and its connection to the Former Foreign Settlement are expected to improve walkability within the district.

This study aims to clarify changes in the amount and distribution of urban greenery associated with urban redevelopment in the Uemachi Plateau area of Osaka. Green coverage was extracted from satellite imagery using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and its relationship with urban redevelopment was analyzed by overlaying green coverage data with building and land-use data from 2000, 2013, and 2021. Field surveys were also conducted to examine qualitative changes in greenery. The results showed that the green coverage ratio remained relatively stable at approximately 15–16% between 2003 and 2022, exceeding the average for Osaka City. While the green coverage ratio increased in apartment housing areas, it decreased in religious and educational facilities. In 2022, approximately 90% of the green coverage was distributed in areas without building renewal and in non-building-covered land. Field observations revealed that although redevelopment sometimes reduced the amount of greenery, landscape improvements enhanced the visibility and continuity of green spaces.

“ Corporate relocation offers a potential solution to Tokyo's overconcentration, yet the objective impact on “employees”“richness of life””remains unclear. Using the Pasona Group’s relocation to Awaji City, this study quantified the difference in indirect utility between employees in Awaji and Tokyo using an extended Cobb-Douglas model incorporating access costs to medical and educational facilities. The results showed that the benefits of
reduced housing costs and commuting time in Awaji significantly outweighed the disadvantages of lower accessibility, equating to a monetary value of approximately 161,000 JPY per month. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis demonstrated that utility in Awaji remains superior even with a 40% wage reduction, quantitatively proving that corporate relocation effectively enhances employees’ economic well-being.”

In regional Japanese cities, population decline and suburbanization have driven retail store closures, raising concerns about deteriorating living convenience. This study develops a supply-demand equilibrium model that endogenizes consumers' store choice behavior and retailers' entry and exit, and applies it to Takamatsu City to evaluate the impacts of compact city policy on living service levels and environmental burden through 2050 at a 500-m mesh scale. Demand parameters estimated from person trip survey data ensured high reproducibility of observed retail sales. Comparing a trend scenario with a population concentration scenario, the results show that concentration reduces citywide CO2 emissions by about 2.4%, while accelerating store withdrawal outside the residential inducement area and substantially increasing shopping disutility for residents remaining there. These findings quantitatively reveal a trade-off between reducing environmental burden and maintaining living convenience, and the concentration of burdens on residents outside the area.

This study aims to clarify the essential factors for sustainable area management in suburban cities of major metropolitan areas, which typically lack distinct local tourism resources. Focusing on the Urban Regeneration Promotion Corporation in Neyagawa City, Osaka Prefecture, this research analyzes its activities from three perspectives: financial resources, institutional systems, and organizational structure, followed by a comparison with other suburban cities.
The findings reveal three key success factors. Financially, the organization established an independent revenue model utilizing its station-front location, such as parking partnerships. Institutionally, it actively utilized special regulatory provisions to transform public spaces from mere transit routes into vibrant places for interaction. Organizationally, it functioned effectively as an intermediary support organization collaborating with external professionals.
Ultimately, this study demonstrates that even typical ““bed towns”” can achieve sustainable urban development by strategically combining existing urban infrastructure, institutional frameworks, and areastrong organizational management capabilities.

This study elucidated the challenges of the residential environment from both physical and psychological perspectives, using Nishinomiya-hama, an artificial island residential area experiencing population decline and an aging demographic, as a case study. A comparative analysis with similar regions revealed a structural “shortage of green space,” with the residential area's green space ratio at 17.7%. Conversely, a questionnaire survey of residents demonstrated that approximately 80% perceive the “sea” in their daily lives. This revealed a structure in which this environmental value offsets the low convenience of living and sustains the intention to settle. However, a distinct generational divide in settlement intention exists, bordered by those in their 50s, showing a significant trend of departure among the working and child-rearing generations. To revitalize the town into a community where multiple generations continue to reside, it is essential to reconstruct comfortable mobility spaces that connect the existing resource of the “sea” with the deficient “greenery.”

This study examined the “Water Metropolis Osaka Bridge Terrace” social experiment conducted on Suishou Bridge in Osaka, with the aim of clarifying the actual utilization of bridge space and the impact of street furniture installation on visitors’ staying behavior. Results from visitor questionnaires and video-based behavioral observations confirmed that the bridge space functions as a stopover space within the flow of movement through surrounding public spaces. Furthermore, the installation of street furniture improved evaluations of comfort and water affinity, and differences in the quantity, layout, and types of provided content were found to influence patterns and duration of staying behavior. In addition, the importance of coordinated utilization with surrounding public spaces and events was identified, suggesting the potential for bridge spaces to function not only as passageways but also as public spaces capable of accommodating diverse staying activities. These findings indicate directions for the planned enhancement of the staying function of bridge spaces.

This study investigates the transformation of meeting-up behavior in the smartphone era and the potential of meeting places as ”amenity spaces.”Observations and scoring of ”cognitive” and ”amenity”were conducted at four locations around Osaka Station. The results showed that locations with high cognitive but low amenity served merely as functional transit points, with post-meeting stay times under one minute. In contrast, high-amenity locations fostered social interaction and longer stays. Furthermore, ”leaning” behavior was identified as a modern adaptation to stabilize smartphone use, serving as a ”quasi-amenity.”The study concludes that modern meeting places should evolve from simple landmarks into comfortable spaces that support sequential group merging and digital activities.

This study analyzes the purchase decision-making process for food trucks in a station plaza. Focusing on a situation in which pedestrians encounter food trucks while walking, we conducted a purchasing experiment and follow-up interviews. Participants watched pedestrian-view videos, checked storefront photos, selected a store and products, and then explained their thoughts while reviewing eye-tracker video recordings. Interview statements were classified into four layers: preconditions, information contact, cognition and evaluation, and judgment results. The results showed that participants did not decide to purchase immediately after seeing a product. Instead, they first considered products as candidates based on product names, types, prices, and visual appearance. They then made final judgments by evaluating price, quantity, familiarity, reassurance, and ease of eating on site. Visual appeal and novelty were related to candidate formation, while familiarity supported purchase decisions. These findings suggest the importance of clear information presentation and spatial conditions that support post-purchase use.

This study investigates the influence of busking on the urban sound environment at Umekita in front of Osaka Station. Noise measurements were conducted at 468 locations, and a semantic differential (SD) survey was used to evaluate people's perceptions of different soundscape conditions. The results revealed that a balanced combination of busking sounds and ambient urban sounds received the highest evaluations for comfort, enjoyment, and liveliness. In contrast, environments dominated by busking sounds tended to reduce perceived comfort. Factor analysis indicated that busking can positively contribute to urban soundscapes when its volume and location are appropriately managed. These findings suggest that busking has the potential to enhance the attractiveness and vibrancy of public spaces while maintaining a pleasant acoustic environment. Therefore, effective management of busking activities is important for creating high-quality urban public spaces.

This study aims to clarify the characteristics of outdoor dining permit systems in New York City, Melbourne, and Paris. Based on the guidelines of each city, the regulatory contents were organized and analyzed, with particular attention to the purposes for which each regulation was established and the methods by which they are prescribed, such as quantitative and qualitative approaches. The results show that New York City quantitatively secures traffic functions and establishes a clear regulatory system. Melbourne secures minimum traffic functions while guiding improvements in the quality of street spaces. Paris emphasizes landscape formation and operates its system according to local characteristics by combining general regulations with area-specific rules. Comparing these findings with Japan, the current Japanese system for street space utilization places emphasis on securing traffic functions. Therefore, it is necessary for Japan to further develop its system by also placing greater importance on securing spatial functions.

In recent years, public space utilization has expanded to bridge spaces. This study investigates the utilization of bridge space behavior observations and user questionnaires focusing on the ‘Suito-Osaka Bridge Terrace’ pilot project at Nakanoshima Garden Bridge. The results of the behavioral observations revealed that conversation, eating and drinking, and resting at tables and chairs were the predominant activities, that the number of users staying on the bridge increased during program implementation, and that the locations where users stayed differed between participatory and viewing programs. The questionnaire survey indicated high evaluations of the environmental and scenic qualities of the bridge space and revealed that the programs influenced both perceptions of vibrancy and impressions of the bridge. These findings suggest the latent potential of bridge spaces as outdoor public spaces and the potential of program implementation for creating vibrancy.

In recent years, tourism gentrification, which transforms the spatial and social structures of local communities, has become an increasingly important issue in historic urban areas. This study examines four areas in the eastern part of Kyoto’s historic city center (the Tanoji District) and analyzes changes in tourism-related land use, building frontage characteristics, and population dynamics between 2010 and 2020. The results reveal that tourism-led transformation can be categorized into four patterns: tourism activity infiltration, spatial restructuring, land-use conversion, and stability. Furthermore, two broader forms of tourism-led transformation were identified: visible transformation, accompanied by changes in building frontages, and invisible transformation, in which land-use changes occur while external appearances remain largely unchanged. These findings suggest that tourism-led transformation in Kyoto’s historic city center does not necessarily manifest itself through visible changes in the urban landscape and may proceed while preserving the existing streetscape.

This study aims to clarify the actual conditions of street smoking in the Namba area of Osaka, where smoking on public streets has been prohibited. A total of 132 streets within the study area were surveyed, and street characteristics—including street width, pavement type, building use, distance to smoking spots, and pedestrian volume—were analyzed in relation to the number of cigarette butts observed on the streets.
The results showed that cigarette butts were concentrated not on major pedestrian routes such as Ebisubashi-suji Shopping Street and Nankai-dori Street, but rather on adjacent streets and back streets. Higher numbers of cigarette butts were observed on narrow streets and on streets with a concentration of entertainment and dining facilities, whereas fewer were found on open streets with many storefront openings. In addition, no clear relationship was identified between the amount of cigarette litter and the distance to designated smoking areas. A detailed investigation revealed that cigarette butts tended to accumulate near street edges, vending machines, and utility poles. These findings suggest that street smoking is influenced more strongly by spatial characteristics, such as low visibility and the ease of lingering, than by pedestrian traffic volume.

At Akashi Park, which includes Akashi Castle, a controversy arose over tree felling: while the local government sought to preserve the stone walls and protect the environment, civic groups demanded a halt to the felling to safeguard the ecosystem. Against this backdrop, this study examines Akashi Park as a castle site park and explores its multifaceted nature based on research materials regarding the tree felling issue, as well as questionnaire and image map surveys. The results indicate that, as perceived by Akashi citizens, Akashi Park and Akashi Castle are integral to the city’s identity. The study highlights that while a balance among historical, natural, and recreational values is prioritized, the park’s value as a place of relaxation for residents takes precedence over its appeal to tourists. Furthermore, the study explores the possibility that this perception is rooted in a sense of place identity derived from personal spatial experiences gained through park use.

This study evaluated the relationship between the degree of survival of historic highway landscapes and street network configurations analyzed using Space Syntax theory in 16 settlement sections along the Takenouchi Kaido. The results showed that historic highway landscapes tend to survive to a greater extent in suburban settlements. Regarding street network configuration, local-scale closeness centrality and both local- and global-scale betweenness centrality were higher within settlement sections than in the surrounding areas. Furthermore, closeness centrality tended to be higher in urban settlements that were well connected to systematically planned street networks, indicating differences among settlements. A comparison of all sections revealed a strong negative correlation between the evaluation of highway landscapes and closeness centrality. These findings suggest that weaker connectivity to planned street networks and a more secluded street configuration contribute to the preservation of historic highway landscapes.

This study conducted a kernel density analysis of roads less than 4 m in width in Osaka City and selected four districts with different levels of alleyway density. Furthermore, spatial configurations were classified using Space Syntax analysis, and a perceptual evaluation experiment was conducted employing the Semantic Differential (SD) method with 64 photographs of alleyway landscapes.
The results revealed that the value of alleyway spaces is shaped by the combination of alleyway distribution density, street depth structure, and the perceptual and psychological characteristics generated by these spatial conditions. Factor analysis extracted three principal evaluation dimensions: residential familiarity, psychological depth, and perceived spatiality. The findings suggest that planning and conservation strategies for alleyway spaces should not rely solely on uniform street improvement or road widening, but should instead consider the diversity of impressions and experiences produced by variations in alleyway density and spatial depth structure.

This paper explores future directions for location regulations by investigating the long-term and comprehensive location patterns of ryokan, hotels and budget hotels and by clarifying the regulatory guidelines. As a case study of Kyoto, an international tourist city, it provides a basis for discussing the ideal coexistence between accommodation facilities and local communities.
The results of the survey and analysis revealed the following: (1) Analysis of the locations of these two types of accommodation facilities indicates that Higashiyama Ward exhibits unique trends; (2) “Ryokan and hotels” are located in areas with high transportation accessibility, such as along major roads, while “budget hotels” are located near tourist areas or within alleyways; and (3) Minami Ward has seen an increase in the number of facilities since the guidelines were established, indicating that it is currently in the stage of considering new measures.
Therefore, although no major deficiencies were identified in the structure of the guidelines, the findings suggest that it is now necessary to consider regulations governing the location of accommodation facilities.
