Aiming at improvement of the pitting corrosion of SUS 316, the following conclusions have been obtained after investigation of effects of Ni and Mo which are the main composition of SUS 316 and also Ta and S whose composition is extremely small in SUS 316.
1) Mo gives the most effective influences in improving the pitting corrosion. The pitting corrosion resistance is found to be good if Mo is found to be around the maximum contents regulated in JIS (3.00%).
2) The effect of Ni is found to be little within the standard and an interaction between Ni and Ta is observed. It is advisable to keep Ni as much as 11.0% in case of Ta 0.00% and 13.0% in case of Ta 0.05% respectively.
3) Lowering of S gives direct influence to the betterment of the pitting corrosion resistance.
4) The optimum limit of Ta, in case of Ni 13.0%, is from 0.03 to 0.05%.
