    Daido's Shibukawa Plant gives much more weight to high class steel and forgings and it has high class steelmaking plant from melting, remelting, forging, heat treatment to machining.
    Special melting and refining section has VIF, IF, PIF, four furnaces of ESR and four furnaces of VAR. In this section, the high grade steels and alloys such as superalloy, heat resisting alloy for aircraft, die steel and high speed steel are mainly produced with remelting method.
    Up to the present, this section has the three vacuum arc remelting furnaces of 2, 3 and 6ton, and the operation of these furnaces was controlled by an operator for each furnace.
    On the increasing chance of 10t VAR in 1981, the total control system with microcomputer was introduced into the operation of VAR.
    In this system the current could be controlled automatically and the current, voltage, vacuum level, electrode driving rate and the temperature of cooling water could also be measured and recorded automatically.
    The alarm of the abnormal operation is messaged to the operator when these values are over the control limit against the basic value.
    Introducing this system, it was possible to operate in the best melting condition, and also to produce the material of high quality stably. Additionally, the four furnaces of VAR by one operator could be operated.

    0.25ton scrap preheater was prepared for experimental study on a utilization of the waste gas being exhausted from electric arc furnace. This paper deals with the effects of gas temperature, the kind of scrap and fill ratio etc. on the heat efficiency of scrap preheating.
    The results obtained in the present experiment showed good agreements with the practical data of 10ton scrap preheater.

    To cope with remarkable rising of electric power and fuel price in these days, Daido's Shibukawa Plant has also been performing different kinds of countermeasure for energy saving. Sensible heat of exhaust gas from electric furnace occupies about 18% of total output heat. In order to make effective use of this sensible heat of exhaust gas there was installed a scrap preheater to a 25ton electric furnace at Shibukawa Plant in January of 1981 and a big result was obtained and therefore, this report describes about the operation situation and its actual results.

    The test system to estimate temperatures of the billet in the furnace is composed of the microcomputer.
    From the on-line test using this system, following results are obtained:
    (1) In the steady state, temperatures of the billet in the furnace can be estimated by the microcomputer.
    (2) In the heating operation of the billet, this system is useful for operators to save fuel oil.

    By using the CCD image sensor, linear scanning type radiation pyrometer was developed which has following capacities without mecanical scanning.
    (1) To mesure the temperature of the very small target which is moving in the wide field of view.
    (2) To measure the linear distribution of temperature.
    This pyrometer is being used in the technique of controlled rolling and saving energy.

    Long sintered tubes were made by extrusion process using SUS316L water-atomized powder.
    Their characteristics for sintered filters were compared with those made by conventional pressing process.
    Results were summarized as follows:
    1) The density and the radial crushing strength are uniformly distributed in sintered filters made by extrusion while they become lower in the center of the longitudinal direction in the pressed one.
    2) The filtration grade and the pressure loss are also uniformly distributed in the extruded filters while the former becomes higher and the latter lower in the center of the longitudinal direction in the pressed one.
    3) The radial crushing strength of the extruded filters is higher than that of pressed one in the same filtration grade.

    For heavy duty gasoline or diesel engines, exhaust valves of 21-2N or 21-4N are generally coated by cobalt-base hard facing alloys, at face. But the sluggish supply and the spiraling price of cobalt recently forced antomakers to adopt valves of high-grade superalloys without hard facing.
    Candidate superalloys for high-performance exhaust valves are gamma-prime strengthened nickel-base alloys such as Inconel 751 and Nimoinc 80A. Unfortunately above-mentioned alloys are too expensive for automobile components. So authors tried to develop agamma-prime strengthened iron-base alloy, which bears basicalloy 40% Ni-19% Cr-Al-Ti. To optimize Al and Ti contents the effect of the total amount and the ratio of them was examined thoroughly on hardness, strength and corrosion resistance of experimental alloys at elevated temperatures.
    Finally authors succeeded in developing a new gamma-prime strengthened iron-base superalloy, RS914, which is inexpensive and satisfies requirements for exhaust valves of both gasoline and diesel engines.

    In order to understand the interfacial phenomena observed in the steelmaking process, the wettability of various solid materials by melts and that of molten steel by molten slag at high temperature have been described. In general, the wettability of the solid oxide by the molten slag was much better than that of the solid oxide by the molten iron. The surface active element (O, S, Se, Te) dissolved in the molten iron play an important role in the wetting of the molten iron.

    Lately, in the iron and steelmaking industry, it is required to make accurate and rapid measurement of temperatures at all the points in the production line from the point of view of high quality and energy saving.
    Responding to such a request, there was developed a portable digital radiation thermometer named “STAR THERMO” by which everybody is able to make rapid measurement of temperature with no contact and therefore, there have been described hereunder about the capacity and function.
