    The fluorescent magnetic particle testing is used mostly to detect the surface defects of square billets. The conventional method relies on naked eyes and so it lacks consistency and efficiency. This paper refers the development of an automatic system for this testing by the CCD camera and the image processing technology.
    Several experimental testing by the system proposed in this paper shows the following results: (1) seam defects deeper than 0.3mm were mostly detected and over-detection rate is nearly equal to 0%,
    (2) high detection speed as 40m/min is realized.
    These results assure that the proposed automatic testing system is an effective one to detect the surface defects of square billets and can be employed for practical use.

    Superalloy (Inconel 718) and stainless steel (SUS 316) were melted by using 300kW Electron Beam (EB) melting furnace and the evaporation behavior of elements and the effect of purification were investigated.
    1) The evaporation behavior could be explained well by a Langmuir evaporation equation under the consideration of the vapor pressure of element and the activity in metal.
    2) The uniformalization of the chemical composition in the longitudinal direction can not be expected because the molten pool is not so deep, and so the accurate control of EB condition is important.
    3) In the investigation on mechanical properties of Inconel 718, creep rupture properties of EB melted material were better than those of VAR remelted material, which is considered to be caused by the purification of EB melted ingot.

    On the two 13Cr-Fe alloys including 0.8%Si and 2.5%Al which were given attention as a new magnetic alloy for alternating field, the amplitude relative permeability in magnetic field is measured and studied to influence of thickness at ring specimen and electrical resistivity as compared with magnetic soft iron and 1%Si-Fe alloy. The amplitude relative permeability of 0.8Si-13Cr-Fe alloy is superior than those of magnetic soft iron and 1%Si-Fe alloy at ferquency range 5 to 20kHz and that of 2.5Al-13Cr-Fe alloy is higher than the compared alloys at almost all frequencies invesigated, although the FeCr alloys have lower magnetic properties in direct magnetic field. Smaller dependence of amplitude relative permeability in alternating field on the thickness of specimens is observed for the two FeCr magnetic alloys than magnetic soft iron and 1%Si-Fe alloy. These changes are dependent on their electrical resistivity.

    Nickel in alloys is analyzed by the EDTA titration after separation as nickel dimethylglyoxime according to JIS G 1216. But this method is not applicable to determine Ni contents precisely in high Ni alloys for electronic devices or shape memorable elements. Authors reviewed the above as follows.
    1. Precipitates of W, Nb and Ta in a primary solution are filtrated out after the particle size refining.
    2. Both of Cu and Co are eliminated from the solution through the anion exchange resin bed.
    3. Addition of tartaric acid and later ammonia prevents Mn, V and Fe from coprecipitating with Ni dimethylglyoxime.
    4. The secondary solution of the Ni compound precipitates is analyzed with a photometric titrator more accurate than visual or potentiometric ones.
    5. The Ni in the filtrate of the primary solution is analyzed with an atomic absorption spectrometer.
    6. The Ni content in the alloy are derived from the sum of two values obtained at 4 and 5.
    The standard deviation of the new Ni analysis was reduced to 0.034% from the conventional 0.08% for an alloy with 54.5%Ni.

    With the diversification of culture, musical instruments have become more diversified and closer to us.
    Musical instruments are classified into keyboard instruments, wind instruments, stringed instruments, and percussions. Each instrument is made up of many varieties of materials.
    This paper takes up such major instruments as pianos, electric organs, and wind instruments and describes metallic materials used in these instruments and touches upon the role of materials in still mysterious sounds of musical instruments.

    Recently, the heat treatment of steel wire is required to get higher productivity with no decarburization. In this situation, atmosphere (PF) control is very important.
    This paper explains Fuzzy control system for a Continuous Annealing Furnace. First, characteristic of the Continuous Furnace is discussed, then the Fuzzy control system is introduced to gain high-performance PF control.

    Uniform heating to materials in a furnace is one of the important factors for every kind of heat treatment, and effective gas flow is required as one of the necessary means to achieve the uniform heating in a furnace especially in a lower temperature atmosphere, though it has not been elucidated.
    The gas flow state caused by recirculating fans in a furnace has been studied through experiments and computer simulations with this fact as a background.
    This paper reports the improvements of gas flow state, and usefulness of computer simulation.

    A new ladle refining furnace for manufacture of light charge, has been developed in Tsukiji Plant, Steel Casting Product Div. Daido Steel Co., Ltd. This furnace, named VILF (Vacuum Induction Ladle Furnace) consists of inducton heating coil, special ladle and vacuum system.
    The characteristics of this ladle furnace are as follows.
    (1) Steel shell of this ladle has special structure. It is not heated by induction heating and does not affect magnetic flux.
    (2) VILF can treat molten steel under vacuum condition with induction heating.
    (3) It is able to heat and degass simultaneously. This is suitable for a few ton steel.
    (4) Because of refining under vacuum condition, low oxygen content (20±5ppm) is gained in a short time.
    (5) Free from C pick up, this is utilized as holding furnace for low C stainless steel.

    New Fe-34%Ni lead frame alloy has been developed by lowering the nickel content of Fe-42%Ni alloy.
    1. Thermal expansion coefficient at 30 to 200°C of Fe-34%Ni alloy is equal to that of the conventional Fe-42%Ni alloy. Therefore, Fe-34%Ni alloy can be molded using the same equipment for Fe-42%Ni alloy.
    2. Fe-34%Ni alloy has mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and solderability equal to the Fe-42%Ni alloy.
    3. 16-pin DIP ICs were packaged with Fe-34%Ni and Fe-42%Ni lead frame alloys and inspected. In aspects of heat dissipation, corrosion resistance, electrical characteristics, etc., the results showed that there was no significant difference between these two package types in any of the tested items.

    For the blooming shop receiving hot ingots or blooms from melting shop, the “chance free rolling” is the most efficient way to fill various small tonnage orders and achieve shorter lead time with less inventory.
    The new shifting guides assembly developed at Daido Steel Chita Plant enabled “chance free rolling”for round bar products to be rolled in one chance of size groupes and being applied to commercial production. The new guides locate at LR 1st, 2st and F4.
    The new guides consist of adjustable roller guides and guide shifters and are controlled by sequencer automatically.
    As a result, the numbers of rolling chances for round bars have been reduced to 12 from 28 a month.
