Sialograms of 30 patients with Sjøgren's syndrome (SjS) were analyzed, using patterns of rounded ectasia in the peripheral portion of the duct system as a hallmark of degrees of progress of the disease. This ectatic change on sialograms, commonly referred as “fruits laden tree pattern”, is characteristic of the parotid glands with SjS. In this paper, we focused on changes in the duct systems on sialograms.
Estimated changes in the duct system in the current investigation inculude diameters, irregularity of the duct wall and degrees of representation of the duct system. The results indicate that the irregularity of the duct wall is another characteristic features in SjS and also indicate that there is strong relationship between changes in the left and right parotid glands of the same patients.
Sialographic changes in the submandibular glands showed different patterns from those of the parotid glands. However, a strong relationship was noted in the pathologic changes of the parotid and submandibular glands in the same patients.
