In order to study the diagnostic value of scintigrams using
99mTcO
4- and
67Ga-citrate in salivary gland tumors, forty-one cases were analyzed.
The positive rate using
99mTcO
4- in all major salivary gland tumors was 81.8%. The positive rate using
67Ga-citrate in minor salivary gland tumors was lower than in major salivary gland tumors. The false positive rate with
67Ga-citrate was 41.9% for benign tumors, suggesting that malignant tumors and benign tumors in the salivary gland could not be differentiated when using scintigraphy alone.
Therefore, the conclusion that detection of metastasis and estimation of salivary gland functions are important only as corollary roles for scintigraphy in the diagnosis of salivary gland tumors is reasonable.
