    this study investigated morphological changes of the articular disc by measurement of the volume of disc on MR images.
    Materials and Methods: This retrospective study investigated 16 joints; 8 showed an unchanged disc configuration and 8 showed a changed configuration during the follow-up period. MR imaging was performed with a 0.3 Tesla MR imager (HITACHI MEDICAL, Tokyo, Japan) using a surface coil measuring 9cm in diameter. The images were obtained on a corrected sagittal plane in a closed mouth position.
    Volume measurements of the articular disc were as follows: 1. Two regions of interest were placed over the articular disc. Measurements of the signal intensity were made directly on the MR imager. 2. Maximal and minimal values of signal intensity were calculated from the mean value±2SD. 3. The maximal value of signal intensity was determined to be higher than the mean value+2SD. Minimal value of signal intensity was determined to be below the value-2SD. 4. The area of the disc was measured directly using level detection software by inputting maximal and minimal signal intensities. 5. Volume was calculated using the area identified on each slice multiplied by 4mm (slice thickness). Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-rank test was used for statistical analysis.
    Results: Unchanged group showed similar disc volumes on both the initial MR image and follow up MR image. However, the changed group showed some difference in volume between initial MR image and follow-up MR image.
    Conclusion: This measurment technique has been shown to be a useful technique for quantitative analysis of morphological changes in the articular disc in the temporomandibular joint on MR image.

    This study was to examine changes in cell-mediated immunity by local irradiation, in particular focusing on the Th1/Th2 balance. We investigated influence due to local irradiation (10Gy) of a portion of the maxilla in mice. The wet-weight of spleen, the percentage and the absolute numbers of the lymphocytes in spleen, wet-weight of the liver, the percentage of lymphocytes in liver were measured using a flow cytometer and values were compared with those obtained from non-irradiationed animals. Furthermore, we analysed the percentage and absolute numbers of T helper 1 (Th1) cells, T cytotoxic 1 (Tc1) cells by the intracellular cytokine.
    The following results were obtained:
    1. Wet-weight of the spleen showed a significant decrease one and three days after irradiation.Wet-weight of the liver did not show any significant change after irradiation.
    2. In spleen, the percentage of Th1-like cells showed a significant increase one and three days after irradiation, and one of the Th2-like cells showed a significant decrease one day after irradiation. The ratio of the Th1-like cells to Th2-like cells showed an extreme increase one and three days after irradiation. The absolute numbers of the Th1-like cells and the Th2-like cells showed a significant decrease one and three days after irradiation.
    In liver, the percentage of the Th1-like cells showed a significant increase one and three days after irradiation, and the percentage of the Th2-like cells did not show any significant change afterirradiation. The ratio of the Th1-like cells to Th2-like cells showed a significant increase one day after irradiation.
    3. In spleen, the percentage of the Th1 cells and Tc1 cells showed a significant increase one and three days after irradiation, but neither of the absolute umbers showed any significant change after irradiation.
    These results indicated that the characteristic changes of Th1/Th2 balance shifted to a Th1-dominant status by irradiation, and the ability from irradiation therapy to the cell-mediated immunity were maintained.
