Porous ceramics have increasingly been applied as a biocompatible bone substitute to fill bone defects in orthopedic and other bone regenerative medicine. To characterize these biomaterials using microfocus-computed tomography (μCT) in this study, we tested the tentative protocols proposed by the working committee of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan. Six commercial bioceramics (φ5×10 mm) were analyzed with high or medium resolution. After 3-D reconstruction, pore distribution and total porosity were calculated in each sample. With medium resolution [FOV (XY plane): 2.8-3.0 mm, 512 pixels], our μCT easily and accurately acquired interior images without destruction of the sample. Except for two samples, in which major pores were not equally distributed, very similar data were obtained in the remaining of samples by four independent observers who employed different types of μCT or image-analysis software. More than 80% of pores appeared to form pore-complexes that were well interconnected with each other. Since these data were confirmed by other methodologies using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and an Hg porosimeter, it is suggested that the committee's protocol could be appropriate for using μCT to accurately characterize the microstructure of porous ceramics by a nondestructive method.

Background: To provide oral healthcare for patients of all ages, dental welfare environments and technical aspects of dentistry have evolved and developed and dental education must also diversify. Student-centered voluntary education and establishment of a life-long self-learning environment are becoming increasingly important in the changing world of dental education. In this article, we introduce a new process for the construction of a web-mediated database containing internet-based teaching files on the normal radiological anatomy of panoramic radiographs and CT images of the oral and maxillofacial regions, as well as a system for the delivery of visual learning materials through an intra-faculty local network. This process was developed by our 5th-year undergraduate students.
Methods: Animated CT scan images were produced using Macintosh Iphoto and Imovie animation software. Normal anatomical images of panoramic radiographs and CT scans were produced using Adobe Illustrator CS and Adobe Photoshop CS. The web database was constructed using Macromedia Dreamweaver MX and Microsoft Internet Explorer. This project was the basis of our participation in the Student Clinician Research Program (SCRP).
Results: At Kyushu Dental College, we developed a new series of teaching files on the web. Uploading these teaching files to the internet allowed many individuals to access the information. Viewers can easily select the area of study that they wish to examine.
Conclusions: These processes suggest that our laboratory practice is a useful tool for promoting students' motivation and improving life-long self learning in dental radiology. We expect that many medical and dental students, practitioners and patients will be able to use our teaching files to learn about the normal radiological anatomy of the oral and maxillofacial regions.
