    Silanized aluminum borate whiskers (ABWs) of 4 wt%, silanized zirconium dioxide nanoparticles (nano-ZrO2) of 2 wt% were mixed with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) powder to get ZrO2-ABWs/PMMA composites. Titanium dioxide (TiO2), silver-supported titanium dioxide (Ag/TiO2), silver-supported zirconium phosphate (Novaron) and tetrapod-like zinc oxide whiskers (T-ZnOw) antibacterial agents of 3 wt% were mixed with ZrO2-ABWs/PMMA composites respectively to fabricate standard specimens. Plaque biofilms on the specimens surface were investigated for colony-forming units (CFUs). In addition, cytotoxicity and mechanical behavior were evaluated. Results showed that the CFUs values of S. mutans and C. albican biofilms on the four antibacterial composites surface were all reduced (p<0.05) compared to the blank and control groups. The antibacterial composites did not have an adverse effect on fibroblast growth in this study (p>0.05) except TiO2 and Ag/TiO2 groups of undiluted extracts. The flexural strength and surface hardness of Novaron and T-ZnOw groups were increased (p<0.05) compared to the control group.

    The purpose of this study is to develop a method for quantifying the fluidity of flowable resin composites using determinations of yield stress. Five commercially available composites (AliteFlo LV, Flow-it ALC, Venus flow, Tetric N-flow, Revolution Formula2) were investigated. Yield stress values were obtained by plotting shear stresses for a range of shear rates, followed by fitting of Casson fluid models to flow curve data and extrapolation to the stress axis. To confirm that yield stress reflected fluidity, apparent viscosity at the lower shear rate (0.2 s−1) was calculated from flow curves. Yield stresses ranged from 5.4 to 43.1 Pa, and were found to capture differences in the fluidity of composites that were not captured by viscosity measurement at the low shear rate. Yield stress is directly proportional to fluidity, and could serve as a simple and precise indicator for selecting flowable resin composites for use in various clinical applications.

    This study evaluated the effect of different types of filler in a resin-based pit and fissure sealant on fluoride release, recharge, and lactic acid neutralization. Resin-based sealant was incorporated with 5% w/w of the following fillers: calcium aluminate cement (CAC), synthesized mesoporous silica (SI), a CAC and SI mixture (CAC+SI), glass-ionomer powder (GIC), and acetic acid-treated GIC (GICA). Sealant without filler served as control. The samples were immersed in deionized water or a lactic acid solution and the concentration of fluoride in the water, before and after fluoride recharge, and the lactic acid pH change, respectively, were determined. The CAC+SI group demonstrated the highest fluoride release after being recharged with fluoride gel. The CAC+SI group also demonstrated increased lactic acid pH. These findings suggest that a resin-based sealant containing synthesized mesoporous silica and calcium aluminate cement may enhance remineralization due to fluoride release and higher pH.

    Molten 10 wt% gatifloxacine (GLFX-loaded poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) was introduced into three-dimensionally interconnected pores and onto the surfaces of hydroxyapatite (HA) granules. The composite granules exhibited clinically sufficient bactericidal activities against Streptococcus milleri and Bacteroides fragilis from 3 h to 10 days. The composite granules were implanted in bone defects created by debridement of osteomyelitis lesions in rabbit mandibles. After 4-week implantation, inflammation in the composite granule-implanted group was significantly smaller than that in the debridement group (p<0.05). Moreover, newly formed bone was observed in the pores and on the surface of HA granules of the composite. These findings show that GFLX/HA composite controls bacterial infection and supports bone regeneration for osteomyelitis treatment.

    Dental adhesive resins based on 4-methacryloxyethyl trimellitate anhydride (4-META)/methyl methacrylate (MMA) have been utilized for root-end filling and the bonding of fractured roots. To increase the success rate of these treatments, it would be beneficial to promote the healing of surrounding tissue by applying growth factors. In this study, the influences of the polymerization properties of 4-META/MMA-based resins on the activity of fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) were evaluated in vitro. The temperature increase caused by the heat generation during polymerization of the 4-META/MMA-based resin was insufficient to change the structure and function of FGF-2. Unpolymerized monomers released from the cured 4-META/MMA-based resin had no negative influences on the ability of FGF-2 to promote the proliferation of osteoblast-like cells. These findings suggest that it is possible to use FGF-2 in combination with 4-META/MMA-based resins.

    The purpose was to describe a novel simple experimental model of injured teeth for developing dental trauma splints (DTS), and to test various splints by combining use of this model and the Periotest® device. Rubber O-rings and spring washers were used to simulate and modify injured tooth mobility. Splinting effects were assessed among three kinds of DTS, including a composite splint and two wire-composite splints (1: rectangular orthodontic wire 0.533×0.635 mm, 2: cobalt-chromium alloy wire Φ0.9 mm). The Periotest values were measured three times for each tooth before and after splint insertion. The splinting effect was defined as the change in tooth mobility. Splinting effects significantly increased in the order wire-composite splint 1<wire-composite splint 2<composite splint (p<0.05). This model system could evaluate the effects of DTS including the differences among various splint methods, which showed reasonable reproducibility of dental trauma situations depending on severity in clinical usage.

    The purpose of this study was to evaluate polymerization shrinkage and other physical properties of newly-developed cavity base materials for bulk filling technique, with the brand name BULK BASE (BBS). Polymerization shrinkage was measured according to ISO/FDIS 17304. BBS showed the significantly lowest polymerization shrinkage and significantly higher depth of cure than conventional flowable resin composites (p<0.05). The Knoop hardness, flexural strength and elastic modulus of that were significantly lower than conventional flowable resin composites (p<0.05). BBS had the significantly greatest filler content (p<0.05). SEM images of the surface showed failure of fillers. The lowest polymerization shrinkage was due to the incorporation of a new type of low shrinkage monomer, which has urethane moieties. There were no clear correlations between inorganic filler contents and polymerization shrinkage, flexural strength and elastic modulus. In conclusion, the low polymerization shrinkage of BBS will be useful for cavity treatment in dental clinics.

    The influence of photoirradiation conditions on dentin bond durability and interfacial characteristics of universal adhesives was investigated. Universal adhesives were applied to the dentin surfaces and photoirradiated with 100 mW/cm2 for 40 s, 200 mW/cm2 for 20 s, and 400 mW/cm2 for 10 s. A resin composite was bonded to dentin to determine shear bond strength after 24 h water storage and 30,000 thermal cycles, and water contact angle of cured adhesive were measured by the sessile drop method. Greater dentin bond strengths after 24 h water storage and 30,000 thermal cycles were achieved under these conditions at light intensity exceeding 200 mW/cm2. Universal adhesives photoirradiated above 200 mW/cm2 exhibited significantly higher water contact angles than those at 100 mW/cm2. The results of this study suggested that the photoirradiation conditions affect the dentin bond durability and interfacial characteristics of universal adhesives even at the same total energy.

    This study evaluated the effects of ceramic surface treatment agents on shear bond strengths to ceramic materials with and without thermocycling. Ceramic plates were prepared from feldspathic ceramic; AAA, lithium disilicate ceramic material; IPS e.max Press, zirconia ceramic; Lava. Ceramic surfaces were pretreated with one of five surface treatment agents (Clearfil PhotoBond mixed with Porcelainbond activator (PB), Clearfil SE One mixed with Porcelainbond activator (SO), Ceramic Primer (CP), Universal Primer (UP), Scotchbond Universal (SU)), and then a resin cement (Clapearl DC) was filled. After 0, 5,000, and 10,000 thermocycles, micro-shear bond strengths between ceramic-cement interfaces were determined. SU exhibited significantly lower initial bond strength to AAA and e.max than PB, SO, CP, and UP. For Lava, PB, SO, CP and SU exhibited higher initial bond strengths than UP. Thermocycles reduced bond strengths to all the ceramic materials with any surface treatment.

    The influences of air-powder polishing with glycine or sodium bicarbonate powders on shear bond strengths (SBS) and surface-free energies of universal adhesives were examined. Scotchbond Universal Adhesive (SU, 3M ESPE), G-Premio Bond (GP, GC), Adhese Universal (AU, Ivoclar Vivadent), and All-Bond Universal (AB, Bisco) were used in this study. Bovine dentin surfaces were air polished with glycine or sodium bicarbonate powders prior to the bonding procedure, and resin pastes were bonded to the dentin surface using universal adhesives. SBSs were determined after 24-h storage in distilled water at 37°C. Surface-free energy was then determined by measuring contact angles using three test liquids on dentin surfaces. Significantly lower SBSs were observed for dentin that was air-powder polished and surface-free energies were concomitantly lowered. This study indicated that air-powder polishing influences SBSs and surface-free energies. However, glycine powder produced smaller changes in these surface parameters than sodium bicarbonate.

    This study aimed to determine the effect of crude drugs on the dynamic viscoelasticity and angiogenic property of soft polymer materials, in vitro. Two kinds of polyethyl methacrylates, and crude drugs (Astragalus membranaceus Bunge [HQ] and Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge [DS]) were used in their powdered forms. And, acetyl tributyl citrate and ethyl alcohol were used in the liquid form. The dynamic viscoelasticity of each specimen was measured after 0, 1, 3, 7, 14 and 28 days of immersion in distilled water. The CellPlayer angiogenesis PrimeKit assay was used to test angiogenesis. Significant differences in dynamic viscoelasticity were observed among the materials. Specimens containing 1 wt% HQ showed higher angiogenic activity than those containing 5 wt% and 10 wt% HQ, and DS. Our results suggest that the addition of low amounts of crude drugs to soft polymer materials may promote angiogenesis in human tissues.

    The fracture behavior of CAD/CAM fabricated crowns was investigated as a function of material thickness for six silicate ceramic materials: Mark II, e.max CAD, Celtra Duo milled, Celtra Duo fired, Suprinity, Enamic. Crowns with thicknesses 0.5/1.0/1.5 mm were fabricated with CEREC and adhesively seated to dies fabricated with stereolithography technology (n=144). Thermomechanical loading and fractural loading was performed. Statistical analysis was done with one-way ANOVA and post-hoc Scheffé test. For 1.5 mm, all crowns survived fatigue testing, for 1.0 mm, survival was 100% only for materials e.max CAD and Suprinity. For 0.5 mm, best survival rate was 37.5% for Suprinity. Maximum fractural loading significantly varied among the groups. For 0.5 mm, highest value was found for Suprinity (660.1 N). Mark II showed lowest values for 1.0 mm (482.0 N), and 1.5 mm groups (634.8 N). e.max CAD showed highest values for 1.0 mm (774.2 N), and 1.5 mm groups (1,240.8 N).

    We developed an ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) containing surface pre-reacted glass-ionomer (S-PRG) filler, as a new mouthguard material for preventing intraoral bacterial infection. We examined its physical properties, antimicrobial activity against a major cariogenic bacterium Streptococcus mutans and a periodontopathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis, and its cytotoxicity toward human gingival epithelial cells. S-PRG filler was added to EVA copolymer at 5, 10, 20, or 40 wt% and was processed into disc-shaped test specimens. Only minor differences between the Shore hardness and rebound resilience properties of EVA materials with and without the S-PRG filler were observed. The specimens with S-PRG filler showed bacteriostatic activity toward S. mutans and P. gingivalis and inhibited S. mutans biofilm formation. No cytotoxicity against the gingival epithelial cells was observed. Our findings show that EVA containing S-PRG filler has antimicrobial activity toward pathogenic oral bacteria and may be an effective material for maintaining the oral health of athletes.

    To determine the efficacy of topical applications of 10% casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) paste in reverting white spot lesions (WSLs) after fixed orthodontic treatment. Forty one participants were randomly assigned to either the test group (CPP-ACP) or the control group (only fluoride toothpaste). All patients used regular fluoride-containing toothpaste. CPPACP paste or fluoridated toothpaste was applied on to tooth surfaces with WSLs twice a day during 36-month after de-bonding. The labial/buccal surfaces of teeth were assessed by use of DIAGNOdent pen (DD), Gorelick Index and ICDAS II criteria at baseline (T1) and 36-month (T2) follow-up visits. The total counts of Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus were obtained at T1 and T2. DMFT, DMFS, stimulated flow rate and buffer capacity were calculated in two appointments. Daily usage of CPP-ACP paste was not better than normal care for improving the appearance of WSLs after 36 months.

    The suitability of various post and core materials for the 4-unit zirconia fixed partial denture abutment teeth was investigated to lower stress concentration. Artificial mandibular teeth (44 and 47) were used as the abutment teeth. There were two types of posts and cores: resin composite with glass fiber posts (RC), and cast platinum gold alloy (MC). Two experimental groups were analyzed. For Group RM, the premolars were restored with RC and the molars were restored with MC. For Group MR, the premolars were restored with MC and the molars were restored with RC. Static loading was applied to the occlusal surfaces, and the surface strain of the frameworks and roots was measured with a strain gauge. Group RM had a greater number of statistical differences between premolars and molars compared to Group MR. This result suggests that the Group MR post and core material combination reduces stress concentration.

    The aims were to evaluate the effects of different additives on the adaptation of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) plugs before and after different backfilling techniques and analyze the interference of filling procedures on the fracture resistance of simulated immature teeth. The apical parts of 60 teeth were filled with MTA mixed with distilled water (DW), propylene glycol (PG) or calcium chloride (CaCl2) and backfilled with cold lateral condensation (CLC) or warm vertical compaction (WVC). The specimens were subjected to adaptation analysis and fracture testing. CaCl2 addition resulted in poor marginal adaptation, while PG addition significantly decreased the fracture values (p<0.05). WVC technique negatively affected the marginal adaptation of MTA-CaCl2 plugs and decreased the fracture values of teeth with MTA-PG plugs (p<0.05). Mixing MTA with DW can be recommended as apical plug when the remaining root canal space is going to be filled with either CLC or WVC techniques.

    The purpose of this study was to evaluate and to compare the fracture load and the fracture pattern of monolithic and veneered zirconia posterior fixed dental prostheses (FDPs). Twenty standardized steel dies were prepared to receive posterior 3-unit FDPs. Specimens were randomly divided into 2 groups (n=10): (1) Lava Zirconia, and (2) Lava Plus. All FDPs were cemented using glass ionomer cement and subjected to thermal and mechanical cycling at 5–55ºC with a 30-s dwell time for 120,000 masticatory cycles. All specimens were subjected to a three-point bending test until fracture. Data were statistically analyzed using Student’s t test, paired t-test and Weibull statistics (α=0.05). No differences were observed in fracture load between the groups. Veneering ceramic fractured before than framework in veneered zirconia group. The fracture pattern was different. The tested groups demonstrated clinically acceptable fracture load values. Monolithic zirconia solves the chipping problem.

    In the early stages of biofilm accumulation, the electric charge of the dental enamel and pellicle surfaces is known to be involved. We therefore investigated the relationship between oral hygiene and intraoral electric potential (IoP) in 45 male participants using a double-blind study. IoP, but not body surface electric potential, was loosely correlated with oral hygiene condition (Oral Hygiene Index; OHI). IoP was also loosely correlated with smartphone use; however, there was no significant correlation between smartphone use and OHI. IoP elevation might be caused by OHI elevation resulting from biofilm formation as an internal factor, with smartphone use as an external factor. This in vitro study revealed the generating capacity of Streptococcus mutans accompanied by biofilm accumulation using a microbial fuel cell. These results suggest that IoP elevation is caused by biofilm accumulation induced by power generation of oral bacteria, resulting in elevation of OHI.

    This laboratory study was assessing the nano-mechanical properties (NMP), surface roughness (Sa), and topographic changes caused by ethanol on the surface of heat-polymerized denture base polymers at different time past dough stage. Specimens of heat polymerizing acrylic resin (Interacryl Hot, Interdent, Celje, Slovenia) of size 10×10×3 mm were prepared, wet ground, and polished for uniform smoothness and treated with ethanol in concentrations of 40, 70, and 99.9% for 30, 60, and 120 s and statistical analysis was done. Some statistical significance for Sa were highest with 120 s exposure to 40% ethanol. NMP were the highest for specimens treated with 99.9% ethanol concentration for 120 s, on specimens prepared 30 min past the dough stage. This study suggested that heat-polymerized denture base polymers are prone for changes by ethanol which alters mechanical properties and surface topography. Dough time influenced the ethanol resistance.

    This study aimed to evaluate the effect of sulfinic acid sodium salt interposition after acid and sodium hypochlorite treatment (NC treatment) on dentin bonding durability using a mild type one-step self-etching adhesive. Fifteen human third molars were randomly assigned into three experimental groups according to dentin pretreatment before applying the one-step self-etching adhesive: Cont group, without pretreatment; NC group, pretreatment with phosphoric acid and sodium hypochlorite gel; and NC+AC group, additional treatment with sulfinic acid sodium salt followed by the same pretreatment of the NC group. Microtensile bond strength was measured and the pre-treated dentin surface, fracture modes, and bonding interface were observed. The bond strength of the NC+AC group was significantly higher than that of the other groups (p<0.001). The dentin-adhesive interface was degraded after 1 year only in the Cont group. Our results demonstrated NC treatment improves bonding durability and application of sodium sulfinic acid salt after NC treatment improves bonding effectiveness.
