A questionnaire about rice and soil was distributed to elementary school pupils, junior high school students, high school students, and university students in order to investigate their recognition of soil and its importance. The following results were obtained: (1) a greater proportion of respondents answered that "it would be best to have a little soil in my surroundings" than those who answered "it would be best to have as much soil as possible in my surroundings"; (2) there was significant positive correlation (p<0.05) between the proportion of respondents who answered "I want to know more about soil" and those who answered "I touched soil when I was cultivating rice paddies or other fields" (This finding indicated that touching the soil when they produced rice or other crops was important to improve their interest in soil); (3) most students recognized the function of soil in plant production, but few students recognized the area of paddy fields required to produce the average amount of rice consumed per person per year in Japan; (4) university students in the Faculty of Education were less interested in soil than were those in the Faculty of Agriculture, indicating that soil education should be offered to students in the Faculty of Education in order to improve elementary school pupils' interest in soil.

The changes in soil C stocks caused by cultivation were estimated by comparing C stocks in the A horizons of cultivated fields with those in un-cultivated fields. These fields were in Andosol areas of Tokachi district, Hokkaido. The results were as follows: (1) Three patterns of change in soil C stocks were observed with cultivation: Group 1: increased soil C stocks, seen in Low-humic Andosols; Group 2: no change, seen in High-humic Haplic Andosols; and Group 3: decreased soil C stocks, seen in High-humic Haplic Andosols, High-humic Haplic Wet Andosols, and High-humic Cumulic Wet Andosols. (2) With cultivation, soil C stocks in Group 1 increased by 21.9 to 31.8 Mg C ha^<-1>, whereas those in Group 3 decreased by 78.5 to 149.8 Mg C ha^<-1>. The soil C stocks in the un-cultivated fields in Group 3 were highest among the three groups (more than 250 Mg C ha^<-1>) due to poor drainage; however, pipe drainage improved drainage and decreased soil C stocks in cultivated fields.

We examined methods of producing a new slow-release fertilizer that retains long-term fertilizer efficiency, even during continuous short-term cultivation and long-term cultivation, following the application of a single basal dressing. The aim for this new slow-release fertilizer is long-term fertilizer efficiency not currently possible with conventional slow-release fertilizers. We produced several types of compound fertilizer with different ratios of methylol urea polymerization fertilizer (MU) and acidic fertilizer raw materials (magnesium sulfate and superphosphate). The degree of decomposition of the MU fertilizer differed according to the ratio of fertilizer components. By combining several of these compound fertilizers with different degrees of MU decomposition, we could produce a new slow-release fertilizer that was designated as a mixed fertilizer.

Pod mesocarp rot has occurred in areas of broad bean production in Kagoshima Prefecture since 2004. The content of several minerals from different parts of broad bean plants (Vicia faba L.) and the chemical properties of soil in farmers' fields were investigated to elucidate the causes of the disease. The lower the boron content of the pod, the more severe the symptoms of the disease were. The boron content of certain parts of plants in fields where the disease occurred was lower than where the disease did not occur. There were negative correlations between the incidence of affected pods and the boron content of certain parts of plants in the fields. Severely affected pods had a low borate cross-linking ratio for rhamnogalacturonan II, a diagnostic index of boron deficiency. These results suggest that pod mesocarp rot is caused by boron deficiency.
