The standardization of the binding of journals purchased cooperatively by the Furukawa Industrial Group, which was decided upon by a Documentation Liason Conference of the Furukawa Industrial Group is described. At present, in journal binding, complication in process and business and increased cost are incurred because the colors, back titles and size of the bound, vary according to the various organizations and book binders have to make many different patterns to bind the same kind of journal. This method, which is called "diverse binding", is gold fashioned but has been handed down improvement because of difficulties in rationalization e.g. in mechanization and standardization. In order to standardize the diversity, the Furukawa Industrial Group unified the colors and back titles of the journals and made a standard specification for binding. As a result, improvements in quality, lower costs and simplification in business were attained.
