MELISS system is an in-house technical information service system using computer, and covers pretty wide range of science and technology from 1966. In this system is used coordinate indexing system using indexing terms of natural language (English) in storage and retrieval of the information. As the storage medium, abstract cards with complete bibliographic data,, and magnetic tape files in which only keywords and accession numbers are recorded, are used. Original documents are stored miniaturized in microfiche. Basic retrieval operations are as follows : (1)Ordinaly keword matching method-single term, multi-word term, AND, OR, NOT, (2)Indifferent retrieval method-eliminating error of word's ending variation etc., and (3) comparison of calender year. At present, it takes about 30〜40 sec for each request to retrieve out of 10,000 stored data.
