The dietary habits were studied in relation to disease category regarding male adult patients with hypertension (essential hypertension), ischemic heart disease, atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus, chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, and gastric cancer in the medical wards of two hospitals in Fukuyama city and male healthy officials working for Fukuyama city as control (aged 20-69). The following results were obtained.
1) The intake of high-fiber food was low in patient group, especially so in patients with stomach cancer.
2) The intake of processed food and non-essential food was higher in patients who consumed less high-fiber food, namely in patients with stomach cancer, chronic hepatitis and liver cirrhosis and atherosclerosis.
3) The consumption of beverages was high in patient group, especially so in patients with stomach cancer, chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis and atheriosclerosis.
4) The nutritional balance was worse in patients than in control group. This was particularly notable as regards protein intake in hypertensive patients (essential hypertension).
