The liquid crystal free standing film (LC-FSF) has been applied to investigate structures of the anti-ferroelectric liquid crystal with sub phases. By transmission ellipsometry of LC-FSFs with photoelastic modulator (PEM), dependence of phase difference on the number of layers and tempratures, on Mcident angles of He-Ne laser, were studied. Theoretical analysis based by 4×4 matrix was performed. From the experiment and the theory, interesting results were obtained about the structure of LC-FSFs.

A study of electrooptic effect of a freely suspended ferroelectfic liquid crystal film has been carried out. Alternating electric field was applied to the FS film. Amplitude of a signal from a photodiode is proportional to amplitude of the applied field in a range between 0.33 V/cm and 167 V/cm.

Electrooptic effect of a ferroelectric liquid crystal thin film has been studied. We have prepared cells with three types of geometries ; a freely suspended film (FSF) whose both surfaces are contact with the air, a film transferred onto glass substrate with homeotropic alignment (HTF) from FSF which has asymmetric interfaces, and a homeotropically aligned sandwich cell (HSC) . Compared with electrooptic switching in three types of geometries, the influence of interface condition on the response speed and hysteresis feature of the molecular reorientation has been discussed.

The electrooptical spectra of a ferroelectric liquid crystal, DOBAMBC, have been studied in the free-standing films of various thickness about one helical pitch. It is found that there are two relaxation modes in the films thicker than one helical pitch. The relaxation frequency of the faster mode is less influenced by the change of thickness, but that of slower mode is inversely proportional to the square of film thickness. We have also studied the change in the relaxation frequencies of both modes by varying the applied dc bias field.

A special phase matching for second harmonic (SH) generation was achieved in helicoidal structure of ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) using normally incident two counter propagating waves, when the wavelength of the SH wave was near the selective reflection band edge. In this paper, the effect of the polarizations of the two counter propagating waves on this SHG process was studied.

Recently it was reported that some kinds of achiral banana-shaped molecules show (anti-) ferroelectricity, and this field becomes more attractive. We studied structure and switching behavior in dimer achiral liquid crystals with a alkylene spacer, mOAM5AMOm. These homologous compounds show the dependence of the phase structure on terminal alkyl chain length; in 8OAM5AMO8, a frustrated layer structure appears. We observed this dimer molecules switch with respect to the field by texture observation. Moreover, we measured the local layer structure in this phase with and without a filed by using a X-ray microbeam, and concluded that this frustrated structure was kept even when an electric field was applied.

In the measurements of both electrical and optical switching response of ferro-antiferroelectric liquid crystal, we found pre-switching response which appeared in short time interval before spontaneous polarization reversal. In order to understand the mechanisms of high-speed pre-switching response, we have precisely measured several features of pre-switching response in various conditions.

(1) A somewhat simple and intuitive description of the 1/ω-divergence of the longitudinal viscosity of smectic liquid crystals having the structure of 1D density wave, which was originally derived by Mazenko et al., is given. (2) The ultrasonic absorption coefficient of the brain tissue of ox and the aqueous suspension of the myelin sheath purified from it show an anomalous frequency dependence. It will be demonstrated that these experimental results are successfully explained as due to the 1/ω -divergence of the longitudinal viscosity associated with the lamellar phase of lipid bilayers (a lyotropic smectic A phase) contained richly in these systems.

A electrooptic effect utilizing deformation of helicoidal structure (DHS) in ferroelectric liquid crystals has been studied. The response speed from unwound state under applying high voltage to wound state under applying no voltage is very slow. This response speed becomes fast by means of applied pulse voltage of reversal polarity. The transient stripe texture has been formed by applying pulse voltage of reversal polarity. This transient stripe texture is turned to the nucleation of helicoidal structure after removal of pulse voltage. Therefore, the wound state has been quickly achieved and response speed becomes fast.

Recently it was observed that applying some electric fields rotates liquid crystal layer in smecfic phase, but the mechanism of the layer rotation has not been elucidated yet. Then we have investigated the variations of the molecular alignments and the molecular structures in ultra-short pitch ferroelectfic liquid crystals by polarized infrared and time resolved infrared spectroscopy when the liquid crystals layer rotate. Moreover in the present case we have used two dimensional correlation spectroscopy and curve fitting to analyze the complex spectra.

Time-resolved Raman scattering spectroscopy was applied to study the field-induced orientation process of a ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) cell fabricated at the bottom of a high refraction hemi-cylindrical prism. The method allowed us to measure selectively Raman scattering (RS) spectra from the FLC in a bulk phase and those from the FLC near an SiO_X alignment layer. Time-resolved RS spectra from the two parts were measured by applying stepwise external electric fields, indicating that the FLC near the alignment layer exhibits a retarded response to the field compared to that in the bulk phase. The results proved the usefulness of the proposed method.

A number of low molecular weight gelling agents for common organic solvents have been developed recently. Thermotropic liquid crystals, 4-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) and E7, were gelled by such gelling agents derived from amino acids. The self-organization of the gelling agents through hydrogen bonds leads to the formation of liquid-crystalline physical gels, which exhibit thermoreversible phase transitions. The electro-optical measurements of these gels show that their response to electric fields is faster than that of the single component of liquid crystals.

The electro-optical effect for gelated nematic liquid crystal (GNLC) was investigated on the basis of the light scattering and the light transmittance measurements. The light scattering patterns observed under cross Nicols were similar to polymer spherelites and these patterns were not observed in an isotropic state of 5CB. These results indicate that a spherulite-like aggregate of liquid crystals was formed when the isotropic gel state was changed into the liquid crystalline gel state on cooling. This spherulite-like aggregate did not respond to the applied voltage of 100 V. However, when 3 mo1% of N,N'- dimethylfolmamide(DMF) was added to the GNLC, the magnitude of the light transmittance upon the application of electric voltage was improved in comparison with GNLC without DMF. This indicates that DMF may play an important role for an effective reduction of the intermolecular interaction between 5CB and gelling agents.

We have described the preparation of helical ionomer networks with carboxyl groups by polymerrization of LC monomers at an induced cholesteric phase, and hydrolysis of the helical polymer networks. However, it was difficult to induced large amounts of carboxyl groups in the helical networks, because the excessive hydrolysis resulted in the deformation of the helical structure. On the other hand, Kato et al. reported that mesogenic materials could be obtained by self-assembly of pyridine and carboxylic acid compounds. In this study, we describe preparation of hydrogen bonding nematic monomers and polymerization of the induced cholesteric phase by adding chiral molecules in the hydrogen bonding nematic monomers to give helical polymer networks with carboxyl groups.

New side-chain liquid crystalline polymers with a polyethylenimine skeleton were synthesized by ring-opening polymerization of aziridine mesogenic monomers. Also, those ionic family was prepared. The liquid crystalline and thermal properties of nonionic and ionic liquid crystalline polymers were evaluated by polarizing optical microscopy, DSC measurement, and X-ray diffraction mesurement. The nonionic liquid crystalline polymer with a nitro terminal group in the side-chain showed a smectic A phase with a fan texture. The nonionic liquid crystalline polymer with methylazobenzene side-groups and its ionic family with ammonium units in the polymer backbone exhibited nematic and smectic phases, respectively.

A smectic phase was induced for the mixture of non-mesomorphic side chain type polyethers with alkali metal salts. Complexation the side chain type polyethers with the metal salt was detected by Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements, and these mixtures had ionic conductivity. Therefore in order to clarify the relationship between ionic conductivity and liquid crystalline property for the mixture of mesomorphic and non-mesomorphic side chain type polyethers with alkali metal salts, we have investigated the ionic conductivity of side chain type polyethers-LiC1O_4 mixtures.

Ferroelectric liquid crystalline (FLC) substituent with fluorinated asymmetric moiety were introduced into the 3-position of thiophene ring. The polymerization of 2, 5 - dibrominated thiophene monomers were carried out through dehalogenative polycondensation. Poly (3-FLC substituted thiophene) derivatives were fusible and soluble in ordinary organic solvents. Number-average molecular weights of the polymers were 1.2×10^4 . UV-Vis absorption band were observed from 400 to 415 nm. Phase transition behaviors of the polymers and monomers were examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing optical microscope (POM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). One of the polymers showed chiral smecfic C phase in the heating and cooling processes. It was found that the main chain conjugation were enhanced by spontaneous orientation of the FLC side chains.

Electrical and optical properties of a poly(p-phenylenevinylene) derivative substituted with a long side chain containing alkoxybiphenyl mesogenic unit have been studied. A liquid-crystalline molecular alignment and layer structure have been confirmed by optical microscopic observation and X-ray diffraction measurement, respectively. The dielectric constant changes in a stepwise manner at phase transition temperatures. The band gap of the new polymer in the liquid-crystalline phase has been evaluated to be 2.3 eV, which monotonously decreases with decreasing temperature. A photoluminescence peak was observed at around 560 nm, which corresponds to the emission originating from the poly(p-phenylenevinylene) main chain. An electroluminescnce device has been fabricated using this liquid-crystalline polymer and it has been found that the emission spectra depend on the polarity of the applied electric field.

Novel liquid crystalline (LC) polyacetylene derivatives were synthesized to develop advanced LC conducting polymers with quick responsibility to electric field used as an external force. In practice we tried to synthesize ferroelectric LC (FLC) conducting polymers by introducing chiroptical LC substituents consisting of fluorinated asymmetric moiety into side chains of polyacetylenes. Phase transition behaviors of these polymers were examined by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and polarizing optical microscope (POM). Mesophases as well as higher order structures were evaluated with X-ray diffraction measurements. Two of the polymers synthesized showed chiral smectic C (S_C^*) and chiral nematic (N^*) phases in the heating process, and N^*, S_C^* and S_X^* phases in the cooling process. Observation of the S_C^* phase allows us to expect that the polymer should exhibit the ferroelectricity subjected. The results of XRD and molecular mechanics calculation suggest that FLC si de chains of the FLC polymers are on one-side of main chain.

We present syntheses and properties of thermotropic liquid crystalline conducting polymers with small-bandgaps. The polymers consist of benzenoid and quinonoid structures of polythiophene or polypyrrole backbone with liquid crystalline substituent, where phenylcyclohexyl moiety was adopted as a mesogenic core. Both kinds of polymers exhibited smectic liquid crystalline phases.

Various properties of seal materials used in LCD panels were investigated. It was also found that when pigments particles were added in the seal materials with an adequate concentration, the partial flowage phenomena were improved and the adhesive strength was increased. This results in an improvement of the reliability of the actual LCD panel for high temperature, high humidity and high pressure test.

We studied the influence of ionic impurities on contrast nonuniformity of liquid crystal display panels, which is related to the display threshold voltage non uniformity of STN-LCD, by means of forced ion density and threshold voltage measurement. As a results, We found that accumulation of ionic impurities generated from the inside of LC panel on the edge of LC panels cause decrease in the threshold voltage by high temperature operation.

We have studied the light leakage from spacer beads in TN display. Rubbing direction dependency was observed on the bright spot size around the spacer beads. The tilt angle direction can be considered as the origin of this dependency. The light leakage strongly depends on the material of the spacer beads. The relation between applied voltage and the light leakage in homogeneously oriented cell was also shown, and the strong relation between light leakage and the anchoring strength of LC and a spacer surface was suggested.

Multicolor fluorescent liquid crystal (LC) displays are reported by using a UV light emitting diode as an excitation source and layered LC cells with a fluorescent guest. TN LC cells are prepared by mixing a dichroic UV absorption guest phosphor, and a dichroic UV absorption fluorescent layer is stacked on file TN LC cell. The contrast ratio of fluorescence intensity of LC layer to the outside fluorescent layer is improved.

Micro deflection (MD) LCD modes have been investigated. Zigzag shaped electrodes patterned on each side of substrates are faced in parallel. Initial aligned OFF state of nematic liquid crystal molecules due to rubbed or coated surface effect. The second ON state in which liquid crystal molecules are inclined 45 degrees from the cell surface and also 45 degrees twisted from the initial azimuthal direction due to obliquely applied electric field. Initially alignments are selected to be homogeneous, homeotropic and twisted states. Contrast ratio (CR) of transmitted light was measured for nine combinations of polarizers and analyzers. Contrast ratio was 462:1 for homogeneous alignment, parallel nicols under He-Ne laser illumination. Rise and fall times were 23ms and 294ms, respectively. Contrast ratio of over 100:1 was obtained for whole azimuthal direction at viewing angle of below 40 degrees.

Bistable nematic LCD is expected to rearize the huge multiplexing of the simple matrix without expensive TFTs. 2π-twisted nematic liquid crystal shows histability of down-state and up-state. Static V-T characteristics and dynamic optical response of transition between the two states were calculated. Experimental results approximately agreed with calculations.

We investigated the quasi-bistable in-plane switching mode using flexoelectric effects of nematic liquid crystal. In this mode, the dc electric field is applied to the splay cell at first. Then, the direction of the director reorientation by flexoelectric effects depends on the sign of the applied field. The director reorientation which is directed by the sign of the dc field is held by the dielectric effects with the ac field. The holding states depend on signs of the dc field so that the quasi-bistable is realized. The high electro-optical performance were achieved by optimizing the gap and the pretilt angle of the splay cell, which were in good agreement with calculated results.

Two types of ASM (Axially Symmetric aligned Micro-cell) modes, namely the p-type of ASM and the n-type of ASM have been developed. This study makes a distinction between the two types of ASM from the point of view of the LC molecular alignment and the alignment control factor. Moreover, in the case of the n-type ASM, the response time and stability of ASM alignment can be improved by polymer stabilization with the former nnproving from 80ms to 30ms.

We found that T-V characteristics of MVA-LCDs depended on vertical alignment films. The MVA test cells were made using alignment films with different vertical alignment abilities, and the T-V characteristics were measured. The results showed that there existed an optimum alignment condition for MVA-LCDs to achieve a high transmittance.

Homogeneously aligned LC layers could be obtained by shearing the LC materials on the polyimide (PI) coated substrates with a glass rod. In this paper, improvement of the LC alignment uniformity was studied. It was found that favorable uniform LC alignments could be obtained by orienting the LC director on the glass rod surface coated with rubbed PI films and shearing the LC materials while the glass rod made a rotating motion in the rubbing direction. Formation of multi-domain alignment by such a shearing technique was also tried.

Photopolymerization of a ferroelectric liquid-crystalline monomer, (R)-methylheptyl 4'-(4-(ω-meth-acryloyloxyundecyloxy)benzoyloxy)biphenyl-4-carboxylate, was carried out, using a photoinitiator (Ciba Geigy, Irgacure 784) under an electric field by means of interfering laser beams of an argon-ion laser at 488 nm. The monomer mixture in a 2-μm cell was periodically polymerized in the bright region of the interference pattern, and the initial molecular alignment was stabilized. By applying electric field, the diffraction signal could be observed. This phenomenon is ascribed to the formation of grating, resulting from the change in alignment of the unreacted monomers in the dark region of the interference pattern. The change in diffraction beam intensity was reversible, so that switching of the diffraction beam by electric field could be carried out.

We investigated the formation of holographic grating by means of polymer liquid crystal containing azobenzene moieties as both mesogens and photoresponsive chromophores. First-order diffraction signal of probe beam (He-Ne laser, λ=632.8 nm) was immediately observed when writing beams (Ar^+ laser, λ=488 nm) were turned on. The diffraction efficiency reached approximately 20 %. Furthermore, the diffraction efficiency was affected by the polarization direction of the probe beam. When the direction was parallel to the initial molecular alignment, the diffraction efficiency showed the maximum value. It suggests that the grating was based on the periodic distribution of the refractive indices of nematic (N) and isotropic (I) phases due to the photochemical N to I phase transition. In addition, we succeeded in recording the image hologram of a photomask as an object.

The electro-optical switching of nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) was induced by polyimides (PIs) having photoactive moieties. In this study, we used three types of PIs to explore factors that affect the optical switching of NLCs. By surface analysis using ESCA if was found that photochemical reaction of PI in the surface by photoirradiation did not occur. The reversible optical switching of NLCs is mainly due to photophysical changes of PI surface. It was found that with decreasing cell gaps, the optical response of NLCs became faster because the electro-optical switching was induced by the change in surface properties of the alignment layer. The electro-optical switching behavior of NLCs was also affected by PI film thickness.

Liquid-crystalline behavior and optical property of novel ionic metallomesogens, which are organic cations containing metal complex ions as a counteranion, were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, absorption spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The ammonium complex salts showed a stable liquid-crystalline phase in comparison with the parent compounds. In an ionic layer within the multilamellar self-assembly organized by the ammonium complexes, it was found that two-dimensional polymeric metal complex with Perovskite-type structure is formed spontaneously. Furthermore, the bis(ammonium) tetrachlorometalate of cobalt, zinc and cadmium exhibited S_A-S_A phase transition. Such unusual transition behavior was assumed to originate from the geometrical change in the metal complexes in the ionic layer plane. In addition, the cobalt-containing compounds showed thermochromism and solvatochromism in solution.

Liquid-crystalline polymer networks containing azobenzene molecules were synthesized by bulk polymerization of liquid-crystalline mixtures of liquid -crystalline monomers and azobenzene molecules with or without polymerizable groups. Cross-linking density was found to affect strongly stability of macroscopic molecular orientation of the polymer networks as well as phase transition behavior. The liquid-crystalline polymer network with 5mol% of cross-linking density, which contained 5mol% of azobenzene molecles, showed photoinduced change in birefringence by UV irrdiadon. Time-resolved mesurement revealed that the time of decrease and restoration of the birefringence were in the time ranges of a few microtens and a few microhundreds of seconds, respectively.

Photoresponsive liquid crystalline polymer networks with macroscopically uniaxial molecular orientation were obtained by polymerization of a mixture of liquid crystalline mono and di-acrylates, and an azobenzene compound in a homogenous glass cell at a nematic phase. It was found that stability of the molecular orientation and transparency of the polymer networks strongly depended on the cross-linking density. Stability of the molecular orientation in polymer network increased as cross-linking density increased. In addition, rate of change in birefringence of the polymer network by pulse irradiation increased with an increase in cross-linking density.

(Liquid crystal / polymer network) anisotropic composite films containing azobenzene molecules were prepared by thermal polymerization of liquid crystalline mixture at a nematic phase in a homogeneous glass cell. The polymer network was transparent because of its macroscopic uniaxiat alignment. Upon photoirradiation to cause trans-cis photoisomerization of azobenzene molecules, the polymer network became translucent even at room temperature. The system do not require the use of polarizers and electrodes to fabricate optical devices. The light scattering is ascribed to a bi-phasic morphology in the systems produced transiently by means of the photochemical phase transition.

Common path type of interferometer, which is remarkably stable against the external noise such as a vibration, mechanical shock, temperature fluctuation and etc, can easily be constructed using a bifocal lens. The bifocal lens is usually fabricated using a very expensive uniaxial crystal and it is difficult to make larger size of lens. If we adopt a liquid crystal as an optically anisotropic material, it becomes easy to obtain the bifocal lens by using a lens shape substrate. In this work, a polymer layer with a spherical dip which is filled with nematic liquid crystal is sandwiched between two ITO substrates. A common path type interferometer using the liquid crystal lens is constructed and its basic properties are investigated by measuring an Al deposited thin film.

Since the lens properties of liquid crystal microlens depend on the polarization direction of incident light, effective light percentage is not over 50%. To solve this problem, we propose a double-layer liquid crystal microlens using a UV curable liquid crystal. A single layer of homogenious aligned liquid crystal microlens is fabricated using UV curable liquid crystal as a conventional liquid crystal microlens, and then one of the substrate is removed after polymerization. Two cured liquid crystal layers are stacked as their rubbing directions become perpendicular or parallel each other. Optical properties of these double layer liquid crystal microlens are investigated comparing with the conventional liquid crystal microlens.

The liquid crystal (LC) microlens, which can be obtained by LC molecular orientation effects in an inhomogeneous electric field produced by a hole-patterned electrode, has variable focusing property. However, it usually requires a long response time to drive the LC cell. To overcome this problem, we prepare a polymer stabilized LC microlens using a mixture of nematic LC and a small amount of UV curable LC material. As a result, variable focusing range is restricted, but on the other hand response and recovery time properties are extremely improved in comparison with the usual nematic LC microlens.

We performed molecular dynamics simulation of a mixture of methyl benzoate and transs-4-(trans-4-n-pentylcyclohexyl) cyclohexylcarbonitrile (CCH5), which forms a nematic liquid crystal, and evaluated orientational order parameters and orientational distribution functions. The results are used to test theoretical models for orientational distribution functions and potentials of mean torque. The results show that the truncation of orientational distribution functions at second terms is a poor approximation.

The molecular dynamics calculations have been performed in order to investigate the viscosity of liquid crystal. It was observed that a lower viscosity compound showed a faster decay of order parameter and a larger diffusion constant parallel to molecular long axis. These results suggested that the rotational interaction centering on the axis perpendicular to the molecular long axis and the translational interaction along molecular long axis affect to the viscosity.

We analyzed the structure in the optical isotropic phase observed in the dichiral liquid crystalline compound containing fluorines by X-ray and F-NMR. In the X-ray measurement, four peaks were observed in the small angle range, and the results suggested a kind of cubic structure. From the differences of F-NMR spectra between optical isomers with the different phase sequence, it is considered that the molecular interaction at the chiral parts plays a important role in the appearance of the IsoX phase.

The evolution of super-twisted molecular configuration of nematic liquid crystalline materials confined between two parallel flat plates is simulated using the Landau-de Gennes theory. Three distinct orientation transitions from an originally super-twisted nematic cell are induced by a step decrease of the plate separation distance. It is found that depending on the final plate separation distance there are two different final steady configurations: (1) super-twisted configuration, (2) minimum angle twisted configuration. While in case (1) the configuration does not change with time, in cases (2) the spatial orientation is reconfigured to the lower energy state through the temporal appearance of an abnormal nematic state. The configuration transition can be explained in terms of the ratio of short range order elasticity effect and long range order elasticity effect.

Applying an in-plane DC field and combining it with inversion-field method for poly(γ-benzyl L-glutamate), PBLG, liquid-crystal solution, the dynamics of band-texture evolution and the rotational dynamics of director were investigated. The textural image charge with time was recorded by video camera and then analyzed. The relationship between the band spacing and the time constant of subsequent relaxation to the new equilibrium position after an inversion of field was obtained quantitatively in various conditions of field strength, sample thickness and temperature.

We have investigated the SmA-SmC^* phase transition behavior of main-chain polyesters having a mesogenic p,p'-bibenzoate unit by means of the dielectric and electrooptic measurements. In the SmA phase near the SmA-SmC^* phase transition temperature, an electroclinic effect, which is a pretransitional effect of SmA-SmC^* phase transition, was clearly recognized. Moreover, we observed the relaxation exhibiting softening behavior around the SmA-SmC^* phase transition temperature.

Polygonal deformation of concave smectic-A domains in isotropic phase induced by electric field has been observed in the binary mixtures of octyloxycyanobiphenyl with dodecyl alcohol. It is found that the number of sides of polygonally deformed smectic-A domains (m) is increased with electric field, and that at a constant electric field larger smectic-A domains possess higher values of m. These experimental findings can successfully be explained in terms of numerical solutions to the variation problem for equilibrium shapes of smectic-A phase in isotropic phase [H. Naito, M. Okuda and Z. Ou-Yang, Phys. Rev. Lett. 70, 2912 (1993)]. Electric-field induced polygonal deformation has also been observed in toroidal smectic-A domains and the experimental features similar to those of the polygonally deformed concave domains are found.
