Unconventional liquid crystal oligomers being far from a rod-like structure have been designed based on NMR study of a smectic liquid crystal. We show that design of short-range order of mesogenic unts within a super molecule can lead various frustrated phases with a hierarchical molecular assembly. We demonstrate electro-optical switching in an amorphous blue phase III stabilized by a T-shaped molecule. Furthermore, we present biological activity of some liquid crystalline molecules.

A bistable surface for nematic LCs has been proposed, It was fabricated by using the optical alignment method on the vertical alignment film with the oblique irradiation technique of the polarized UV light. Our research group has also confirmed using a special vertical alignment film witch shown the weak surface anchoring. In this study, the bistable switching depend on the polarity of applying electric field was reported. The nematic LC, ZLI-4792 (Merck), was used. As a reason of the polarity switching, it was expected that the flexoelectric polarization was induced due to the hybrid orientation of the LC directors in the cell.

As LCD such smart phones and tablets is increased to be used out of doors, it is interested in decreasing of contrast ratios of them. Many works are reported about the influence of lights on LCD and it is cleared that the cell characters are changed by mainly UV light. However, chemical change is scarcely reported because of difficulty of analysis of the cell separately in depth profiling. Micro analysis methods such as infrared micro-spectroscopy (μ-IR) and micro-sampling mass spectrometry (μ-MS) give deep insights of chemical and molecular change of LCD directly. In this paper, it has tried to analyze the LCD component change in a cell after UV treatment dividing the cell cross sectional direction, bulk liquid crystal (LC) layer and interface LC/PI film layer, and investigated the component change of LCD. It is supposed that LC1 is much condensed and gathered at the interface LC/PI alignment film at first, but it is destroyed by UV light spreading to the bulk layer and PI film is caused a little chemical change deducing holding voltage also.

The microscope system in combination with a digital image processing is developed for determining all-focused images and depth mapping properties of microscopic objects by using a liquid crystal (LC) lens with an electrically variable focal length. The objects can be selectively illuminated by using a light emitting diode (LED) ring illumination. The irradiation angle of the ring illumination can be controlled by switching each LED device. Three-dimensional distributions of the microscopic objects are determined by applying voltages to the electrodes of the LC lens and tuning a focal plane in a depth direction.

An RGB reflecting multilayer including azobenzene-polymer liquid crystal has been studied. The azobenzene-polymer liquid crystal has a photoinduced reversible refractive index based on photoisomerization. By using the reversible refractive-index change, the reflectance of the multilayer including azobenzene-polymer can be controlled. In this system, the azobenzene molecules change their conformation as a result of a cis-trans transition when they are irradiated with ultraviolet (UV) light. Unfortunately, in a thick multilayer, UV light does not reach the bottom part of the multilayer because UV light is mainly absorbed at its top surface. To solve this problem, the thickness ratio of the multilayer has been studied. We found that an RGB reflection appears by stacking thin azebenzene layers and thick other layers. This is because that the asymmetric periodic structure consists of many frequency components.

π-Conjugated liquid-crystalline (LC) system has attracted as not only optical materials but also next generation of organic electronic materials. It is a key issue to control of molecular alignment for developing optical and electronic devices. LC molecules are known to reorient parallel to the polarization of irradiated light in the field of nonlinear opitcs. In this study, alignment changes in LC system doped with several π-conjugated dyes were induced by a single Ar^+ laser beam. LCs containing coumarin derivatives with high dichroic ratio exhibited photoalignment behavior.

We present a method to enhance the birefringence of liquid crystals (LC) by doping anisotropic metallic nano-rods. The nano-rods were assumed to align in the same direction as the LC molecules. We calculated the effective refractive index of nano-rod doped LCs from the reflection and transmission coefficients. At 5000 nm, the effective ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices were n_o = 1.55 and n_e = 1.85, respectively, resulting in a 50% increase in birefringence from the non-doped value of 0.2.

TN liquid crystal cell, whose twisting angle is azimuthally distributed, is fabricated by combing azimuthal and normal rubbing substrates. The molecular orientation state with twisting angle up to ±90° is stable state, and it transits to that with the twisting angle up to 180° after applying sufficiently high voltage although the state is metastable. The ±180° twisting cell can apply to the polarization converting device to create radial polarization.

We investigated transmitted light intensity-applied voltage characteristics of patterned liquid crystal (LC) cells with microscale homogeneous and twisted nematic (TN) orientation domains. It was revealed that the transmitted light intensity-applied voltage curve is sensitive to the domain size; that is, the driving voltage is reduced as the domain size decreases. This phenomenon is likely to be caused by the increased tilt angle which is induced by the microscale rubbing pattern.

Holographic diffraction gratings were recorded in a low-molecular-weight nematic liquid crystal (LC) doped with trace amounts of photocrosslinkable polymer LC (PPLC) by using a UV laser. We measured diffraction properties of the recorded gratings, and confirmed that polarization gratings consist of spatial distribution of optical anisotropy were induced in the LC cell due to the axis-selective photocrosslinking of the PPLC. In addition, it was demonstrated that the diffraction properties of the gratings can be controlled by applying an external voltage to the LC cell.

We have shown that a highly chiral liquid crystal, when confined in a thin planar cell, exhibits various exotic ordered structures including Skyrmion lattices. In this paper we will discuss optical properties of these structures on the basis of numerical calculations using plane-wave expansions.

By numerical calculations based on a continuum theory, we investigate the dynamics of disclination lines in a cholesteric blue phase cell when an electric field is applied or switched off. We show that the dynamics is complex and sensitively dependent on the field strength and the sign of dielectric anisotropy.

A Ru(III) complex, a kind of transition metal complexes, is known as the chiral dopant with a great helical twisting power. While it has been found that the helical twisting power is systematically increased by the type or the number of substituents, it is still unclear how the molecular structure affects the induced chirality in the system. Thus, in order to understand the microscopic origin of induced chirality derived from the complex dopant, we carried out molecular dynamics simulations for the system of the nematic liquid crystal doped with a Ru(III) complex.

We investigated an orientational transition of a nematic liquid crystal confined in a low energy surface. A very high-sensitivity differential scanning calorimeter was used for the understanding of the thermal property of the system. We observed a substantial change in heat flow at the transition from homeotropic to planar alignments.

Through an analysis of X-ray diffraction data on nTCB, aggregation structure of SmE phase is revealed. The model readily explains experimental findings in contrast to the traditional model of SmE phase. Some implications are discussed in relation to structures of smectic phases formed by mesogens having a core-chain structure.

Photoalignment layers of polyimides containing azobenzene in the backbone structure (Azo-PIs) are formed by thermal imidization of the precursor (polyamide acids: Azo-PAAs) films exposed to polarized ultraviolet (UV) light. By performing a simple amine vapor treatment on the Azo-PAA film prior to UV exposure, we have succeeded in improving the photoalignment efficiency of the Azo-PI backbone structure. As a result, the controllable range of the pretilt angle of liquid crystal (LC) molecules was significantly extended without generation of thread-like textures.

Recently, we succeeded in improving the controllable range of the pretilt angle of liquid crystal with defect-free alignment by using amine-vapor-treated photoalignment layers of polyimides containing azobenzene in the backbone structure (Azo-PI). The molecular orientation of the Azo-PI photoalignment layers with and without the amine vapor treatment was determined by measuring polarized infrared absorption spectra as a function of the angle of incidence. We found that the average inclination angle of the Azo-PI backbone structures in the amine-vapor-treated film was much higher than that in the untreated film.

An alignment direction of almost liquid crystals (LC) is perpendicular to a rubbing direction on a polyvinyl imidazole, and some LCs, however, align parallel. In this study, we mix MBBA with the LC which aligns perpendicular to the rubbing direction and investigate the alignment direction of LC mixtures as a function of the mixing ratio. Influence of different LC chemical structures, for example with a biphenyl ring, a cyclohexane ring or an ester bridge, is also discussed on the easy axis change of rubbed polyvinyl imidazole film.

Previously, we succeeded in developing a series of amino acid ionic liquids by employing 20 different natural amino acids as anion. They have attracted increasing attention among a huge number of ionic liquids because of their unique characteristics, such as excellent designability and high hydrogen-bonding ability. These characteristics stimulate us to envision that the use of amino acid ionic liquids for the self-organization media of amphiphilic molecules should provide a designable lyotropic liquid-crystalline material. In the present study, we demonstrate the self-organization behavior of an amphiphilic molecule in these amino acid ionic liquids and then discuss the potential utility of amino acid ionic liquids as amphiphile self-organization media.

We have investigated the electronic and ionic carrier transports in the discotic columnar and isotropic liquid phase of triphenylene derivatives, 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexaoctylthiotriphenylene (C8STP) and compared with its related alkoxy derivative C8OTP, using time-of-flight technique. Viscosity of C8STP was investigated by a rotation viscometer and relative viscosity was measured by capillary in the isotropic phase. We discuss that the carrier transport channels for electronic and ionic conduction in the isotropic liquid phase and the possibility of the electronic carrier transport (hole hopping) in the isotropic liquid phase of the discotic liquid crystalline photoconductors.

The multi-bilayered films were found to reflect a light of specific wavelength. Photo-responsive multi-bilayered film consisting of azobenzene polymer liquid crystals and polyvinyl alcohol were showed the reversible change in the reflection intensity by irradiation with visible and UV light. In this study, effects of azobenzene structure to optical properties of multi-bilayered films were investigated. The change in reflection intensity was strongly dependent on the number of methylene spacer of azobenzene side group with acrylate polymer main chain. In addition, the response speed of change in reflection intensity will be discussed.

We demonstrated optical manipulation on nematic / smectic liquid crystalline films with azobenzene molecules. The photo-responsive liquid crystal crystalline cells containing a push-pull-substituted azobenzene compound were prepared. For polarized optical microscopy, the motion of micro-sized particulates was observed under visible light irradiation. The micro particles could be manipulated by scanning light. The photo-responsive behavior of the objects will be discussed.

We have reported successful active photoreorientation behavior of microphase separated structure by using photo responsive liquid crystalline block copolymer containing poly(azobenzene methacrylate) (P5Az10MA) as the matrix and poly(butyl methacrylate) as the cylinder (PBMA-b-P5Az10MA). In this paper, we elucidate this active photoreorientation behavior by compare orientation rate of PBMA-b-P5Az10MA block copolymers having different molecular weight and P5Az10MA homopolymer.

We demonstrated optical manipulation of azobenzene-modified micro objects on liquid crystal. The micro objects were modified by azobenzene with a silane group and dispersed on the nematic liquid crystalline thin film prepared by cast method. By observation in polarized optical microscope, the motion of micro objects were investigated under light irradiation. For irradiation of visible light, the micro particles were manipulated by stage-moving. The photo-responsive behavior of the objects was discussed.

We developed the new photo-alignment technology for the large size LCD-TV panel and have successfully adopted it in our Gen 10 and Gen 8 factories. We named our technology Ultraviolet induced multi-domain Vertical Alignment(UV^2A). This technology drastically improved transmittance, contrast ratio and response time of the LCD panel. From viewpoint of the eco-friendly technology, the UV^2A is quite superior to the conventional MVA. In this paper, we report the world's first photo-alignment technology applied to the LCD-TV.

The highly advanced liquid crystal materials having large Δε and low γ_1 are required for an IPS-LCD. We developed and presented fluorinated liquid crystal materials of fused ring systems. On the other hand, we have found that the compound with a 2,6-difluorophenyloxy group showed specially good properties. We present new fluorinated liquid crystal materials with a 5,6,7-trifluoronaphthalene ring as a terminal in a liquid crystal molecule.

Electro-optic (EO) switching of polymer stabilized blue phase liquid crystals (PSBP-LCs) based on the Kerr effect is an attractive phenomenon for various photonic devices; however, the Kerr coefficient is not enough to be used in practical applications. Focusing on the positive correlation between BP lattice constant and Kerr coefficient, we investigated the EO properties of PSBP-LCs that have been elongated in the [110] direction by electrostriction. We also discuss the correlation between the Kerr coefficient and the lattice structure by observing Kossel patterns from the sample.

We prepared photomobile polymer materials composed of crosslinked azobenzene liquid-crystalline polymers and methacrylates with interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) structures, and explored their photoresponsive behavior and durability. Upon exposure to UV light, the IPN films bent toward a light source and the bent films reverted to the initial state when irradiated with visible light. The bending speed of the IPN films depends on the glass transition temperature of methacrylates.

We reported that 4-[4-(7-hydroxyheptyloxy)phenyl]-1-(4-hexylphenyl)-2,3-difluorobenzene showed a cybotactic nematic (Ncyb) phase with a temperature range of 8 K 1). To investigate structural effects on stabilizing the Ncyb phase, we have modified the compound. We prepared some 1,4-diphenyl-2,3-difluorobenzene derivatives. The derivative possessing a hexyloxy group and a 6-hydroxyhexyloxy group was found to indue the Ncyb phase with a temperature range of 25 K. On the other hand, the derivative possessing a 4-methylpentyloxy group instead of the hexyloxy group showed a conventional N phase, a monolayered SmC phase, and a bilayered SmC phase. Furthermore, a U-shaped compound possessing two 1,4-diphenyl-2,3-difluorobenzene units was found to exhibit Ncyb and SmC phases. The layer spacing in these phases decreased continuously with decreasing temperature.

Thermotropic hydrogen-bonded cubic mesogens, 4〓31-n-alkoxy-3〓31-nitrobiphenyl-4-carboxylic acid (ANBC-n, where n is the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chain) and 1,2-bis(4〓31-n-alkoxybenzoyl)hydrazine (BABH-n), supramolecularly organize into two types of bicontinuous cubic (Ia3d and Im3m types) and smectic phases. In the present work, changes in the intermolecular interactions at each portion, i. e. flexible alkyl and rigid core parts, in these compounds at the phase transitions were directly measured using the temperature-variable FT-IR measurement.

The diffusion of small gas molecules in smectic LC films is examined by Molecular Dynamic (MD) Simulation. When the solute molecules are smaller than the solvent constituents, the diffusion is known to deviate from Stokes-Einstein's law, which cannot be described by any general equations. We carried the MD simulation of the gaseous motion in smectic membranes and comparedto some experimental results.

It is known that the diffusional behavior of gaseous solutes, the size of which is smaller than that of the solvents, can be hardly described by unified equations. Here we studied the diffusion of rare gas molecules in smecitic B monolayers by MD simulation, focusing on the mass-dependency of the solute gases. The diffusion coefficients increased with decreasing the mass of the solutes until a certain threshold, and then converged at a constant value. The result suggests that the solutes motion can be determined by the motion of the solvent LC molecules when the mass is smaller than the alkyl group.

We have succeeded in controlling the hold and release of dye molecules using liquid crystalline nano-emulsions (LCNEs). In this paper, we studied the relation between the concentration of liquid crystalline mixture confined in the core of LCNEs and the phase transition temperature of the core part. Moreover, it was revealed that the release temperature, at which dye molecules are released from the core of LCNE, changes depending on the phase transition temperature of the core part of LCNEs. From these results, we will discuss the origin of hold and release of the dye molecules.

Ferroelectric columnar LCs (FCLC) having an axial spontaneous polarization are considered as candidate materials for novel organic electronic devices. The core-shell type FCLC that recently reported by our group has a good wet-processability for glass substrate, and the polarization along its columnar axis can develop along an applied electric field on its thin film. Here, we report the physical properties of the FCLC thin film investigated by means of second-harmonic generation and atomic force microscopies (SHM and AFM), to discuss potential of FCLC towards possible applications.

Calamitic mesogens can pass various mesophases, such as nematic, smectic, and soft crystal phases. In this process, the order of the mesogen, such as position, orientation, intramolecular degree of freedom, is lost step by step from ordered crystal to isotropic liquid. To estimate the degree of disorder in the various mesophases, we investigated 5CBAA and 5BBAA exhibiting SmB phase from the thermodynamic viewpoints.

We found a novel subphase with a six-layer periodicity which appears between the ferroelectric SmC* and the antiferroelectric SmCA*(qT=0) phases. The six-layer periodic structure is directly determined by the microbeam resonant X-ray scattering measurement. Furthermore, considering the dielectric constants, this phase was found to be ferrielectric, assigned as SmCA*(qT=2/3). This subphase indicates the importance of the competition between the ferro- and the antiferro-electric phases and, in that point, it is essentially different from the previously observed six-layer phase. The relation between current theories and our present experimental results has been studied and discussed.

我々は当初、垂直配向でらせん構造を保持したSmC*相に、IPS用電極(10μmピッチ)を用いて、層平行方向の電場に対する電気光学応答挙動(DH-FLCモード)を調べていた。この過程で、SmC*相の電気光学応答は、一様にホメオトロピック(垂直)配向した状態では高い〓値特性を示すが、一旦高電圧を印加して電極エッジに層配向の乱れが生じると、低電圧でも容易に配向回転が誘起され〓値電圧が低下することを不思議に思った。そこで我々は、層平行方向の「構造」の存在と、その「構造」とSmC*相との界面の間が「Slippyな界面」として振舞うことが、電気光学応答特性に重要な関係があることに気がついた。ただし一般的には、層平行な方向は層が連続的に存在し、構造がない状態が最良と考えてられている。ここでは、Slippyな界面を、液晶セル内に積極的に設計して実現する方法には様々な方法があり、界面を生成するための共存相にも、様々な状態を考えることができる。本報告では、その1 つの方法として巨視的な相分離と電極へのぬれ現象(界面を隠蔽するため)を用いたプロセスを提唱し、Slippyな界面の導入による〓値低減効果を実証し、かつ、その物理的なメカニズムを説明する。特に、Slippyな界面を適切に試料内に生成・配置するためのプロセスとして2つの方法を紹介する。(1)Azo色素分子を溶媒分子とし、UV誘起相分離により誘起される液体相分離ドメインと、(2)極性の強い溶媒を用いて、コレステリック(Ch)-SmC*の1 次相転移により誘起される液体相分離ドメインである。これにより、SmC*相の実用化に、ある種のブレークスルー原理を提供できることを期待している。

Discotic columnar liquid crystals (DLCs) are of potential interest for soft organic electronics since the one-dimensional electrical conduction along the columnar axis takes place in their mesophases. Although single component materials have been discussed so far, DLS binary mixtures have been less unexplored probably due to their structural complexity in the mesophase. Among the ordered structural patterns of binary discotic systems, intercolumnar separation is beneficial for efficient photovoltaic materials by use of electron donor/acceptor binary system. However, it is difficult to achieve because of the lack of positive homotropic interactions between donor-donor or acceptor-acceptor molecules. Toward this background, here we report the segregated stacking of donor/acceptor discotic molecules by using phthalocyaninato-polysiloxane and perylenediimide derivatives.

The cholesteric droplets with stripe textures dispersed in the coexisting isotropic medium are known to rotate their textures under a temperature gradient. In spite of the clear observation, it is not known whether the rotation of the stripes should correspond to the director rotation or the barycentric rotation of the droplets. To clarify the rotational mechanism, we investigated the detailed structure of the cholesteric streaky droplets by using polarized and confocal fluorescence microscopy and analyzed the relation between the structure and the rotational speed of the droplets.

We found that the simply intermixing of two monocomponent LC materials induced the unusual phase ordering. In the binary mixture, the transition temperature between the isotropic and LC phases increased significantly, and the higher-ordered phases of SmB appeared at the lower temperature, which could never be seen in either of the original materials. The result of POM observation, DSC and X-ray diffraction measurements suggests that the "anomalous ordering" could be ascribed to a certain kind of micro-phase segregation.

Hemispherical smectic bubbles exhibit nonlinear deformation under a DC field. When a bubble on a flat substrate is given the higher DC field than a threshold, it expands to touch the upper electrode and return back, the process of which is repeated with a constant period. By measuring the electric current through the bubble, we confirmed that the bubbles' nonlinear oscillation should be ascribed to the accumulation and release of the charges on the bubble surface. The oscillation period can be controlled in a wide range by changing the applied voltage and the bubbles' resistance.

We have conducted research on the nanoparticle embedded narrow gap TN(NTN)-LCD and it is shown that there occurs the reduction of operating voltage and response time by -10 % and -50 %, respectively. Using these NTN-LCDs, we have fabricated a field sequential color (FSC)-NTN-LCD and we oftained that this LCD exhibits the Luminance Efficiency of 4.1 cd/W that is almost 4 times larger than that of existing LCD-TV and this may clear the Energy Star Program, Version 5-3 (2011).

We propose the micro-manipulator utilizing the nematic-isotropic phase interface. The position and the movement of the phase interface. The position and the movement of the phase interface are controlled by the temperature profile of the liquid crystalline material using four thermo-modules attached on a liquid crystalline cell. It is confirmed that the particles mixed in the liquid crystal are captured on the phase interface and moved with the movement of the phase interface.

We demonstrate driving a micro rotor made from a photopolymerizable nematic liquid crystal (NLC) by applying an electric field. The micro rotor composed of a shaft and a plate is fabricated by two-photon photopolymerization using a femtosecond laser. The fabricated micro rotor has planar alignment of polymerized liquid crystal. Upon applying an electric field, the micro rotor is rotated from 0°to 90°. In addition, rotation speed is depends on electric field strength. These results are considered to be caused by dielectric anisotropy of the micro rotor.
