In order to elucidate the relationship between parathyroid gland and the liver, I performed parathyroidectomy on rats and observed effects of parathyroidectomy in them. After studying changes of the enzymatic activities of the liver (catalase and amylase), the storage of glycogen and some excretory and metabolic function of the liver, the following results were obtained.
1) The enzymatic activities of the liver such as catalase and amylase, decreased after the parathyroidectomy.
2) Hepatic glycogen, that is histologically observed, diminished but not completely depleted.
3) Urinary excretion of azorubin-S in parathyroidectomized rats were normal.
4) It was supposed that metabolism of tryptophan was also obstructed to some extent judging from diazo-reaction of urine.
On the whole, I noticed that by the parathyroidectomy, the function of the liver of the animal fairly decreased.
