The function of adrenal cortex was examined in the guinea pig suffering from experimental scurvy by the authorized ketosteroid test after H. W. Deane and others. The vascular permeability was observed in the same animals, that is, the amount of eggalbumin injected intravenously was measured after the method of precipitinoreaction. The results can be summarized as follows:-
1) In the early period of the suffering, it was a little decreased about the active principles in the adrenal cortex of the guinea pig which had the positive reaction for the authorized ketosteroid test. Since the second experimental week, there was ovserved an evident increase about the ketosteroids. It was considered to be the hyperfunction of the adrenal cortex in this period. A distinct decrease was observed after the final period, the third experimental week, which was considered to show the hypofunction of the adrenal cortex.
2) The hypofunction of the adrenal cortex was inhibitted by“Rindex”, a cortex hormone, or by vitamin C. But these inhibitory actions were not demonstrated in the final period of the suffering.
3) The vascular permeability was increased distinctly in the guinea pig suffering from scurvy going nearly parallel to the hypofunction of the adrenal cortex.
4) The increased permeability of the blood vessel was inhibitted by the antihistamincs,“Benadrin”.
5) It was considered that the authorized ketosteroid test, established by E.W. Dempsy and G. B. Wislocki and adapted by H. W. Deane and co-workers, was a better hitochemical method to examine the function of the adrenal cortex in contrast to the many other ones. But, it was supposed that Schiff's test was the only one to be discussed further more and to be improved.
