Using rats of Wistar strain, the effect of pituitary hormones excepting TSH on I
131 uptake by the thyroid (2 hrs. value) was investigated with the following results:
When ACTH was administered to adult male rats, it decreased I
131 uptake by the thyroid.
None of FSH, LH and LTH produced in young adult virgin rats, remarkable change in thyroid uptake of I
131 and serum I
131. In this case both FSH and LH caused significant increase in the weight of the ovary, but not LTH.
Growth hormone elicited in adult male rats significant decrease in thyroid uptake of I
131, tended to decrease serum I
131, and produced significant increase in the weight of the parotid and mandibular glands.
Vasopressin produced in adult male rats significant increase in thyroid uptake of I
131 and tended to decrease serum I
131.
