After the disconnection of the pituitary stalk in dogs, weight of the thyroid, uptake of radioactive I131, and blood level of TSH decreased within 2 weeks. The continued administration of our Hypothalamic or Urine Extract, containing a high potency of the thyrotrophin-releasing action, was capable of maintaining the pituitary-thyroidal functions in the normal range. These findings were also confirmed by histological examination. The activity of this extract was diminished by the combined used of chlorpromazine.
When animals were thyroidectomized following the section of the pituitary stalk, the hypothalamic neurosecretory function increased, and the beta cells of the adenohypophysis increased in number and size and showed the augmentation of thyrotrophic function. The humoral agent of the hypothalamus involved in the final step of the regulation over the pituitary-thyroidal system was discussed briefly.

Phases of mitotic activity and some of the histologic features in the regenerating tissues of the forelimb and of the dorsal skin were observed for 29days after partial destruction of the organs in question in both normal and hypophyscctomized adult newts. Two consecutive phases of mitotic activity were learned to take place in regenerating process of the limb-tissues. The one progresses in the epidermis in the early period of regeneration, and the other in the mesodermal tissues in the period succeeding the days of epidermal proliferation. Hypophysectomy was found to inhibit both of the mitotic activities in the regenerating limbs and the epidermal activity in the healing dorsal skin significantly.

    1. The blood amylase curves following the injection of ACTH, adrenocortical hormones, especially ACTH showed a marked difference between alloxan and pancreatectomized dogs, however, the blood sugar curves were almost similar in both types of diabetic dogs.
    2. It is interesting to note a peculiar fact that a striking slip of diastatic enzyme into the blood took place following the injection of ACTH or cortisone by alloxan diabetic dog, however, no such change was observed by insulin injection.
    3. From this foregoing observation, we may suggest that the slip of diastatic enzyme into the blood may be produced by ACTH or cortisone in the state of diminished function of β-cells in pancreas, and may be inhibited by insulin even in the same state of pancreatic function.

Tadpoles of Rhacophorus schlegelii, Rana japonica and Bufo vulgaris formosus were treated with thiourea of various concentrations, and effects of thiourea on the growth and metamorphosis were examined.
    1. A passing hyperthyroidism-like condition was observed directly following the initiation of thiourea treatment.
    2. When the treatment was initiated at earlier tadpole stage and much concentrated solution of thiourea was used, the growth of tadpoles was much more significantly inhibited. When tadpoles were treated for longer periods of time, however, reversed was the case.
    3. Metamorphic change of the animals was inhibited when treated with thiourea from the early tadpole stage. Among those animals, however, considerable individual variations were observed, and in less concentrated solutions, some of the treated animals continued to advance at metamorphosis.
    4. It appears likely that a small quantity of the thyroid hormone might be produced in spite of thiourea treatment.
    5. The treated animals metamorphosed shortly after the cessation of thiourea treatment. The rate of resumed development, however, was learned to be dependent on the magnitude of the preceding treatment.

    1. An injection of the fraction of swine, fowl, frog and salmon, which was precipitated at the step of 0.2 saturated ammonium sulphate solution, could induce ovulation of hypophysectomized newts. The minimum dose to the induce the ovulation was about 0.4mg in the swine and fowl, about 0.025mg in the frog and about 0.2mg in the salmon.
    2. The minimum dose of crude LH or crude FSH to induce ovulation of hypophysectomized newts was about 0.008mg in the swine, fowl and salmon, and about 0.004mg in the frog.
    3. A significant difference in effect on the ovulation of hypophysectomized newts is found between the crude LH and FSH of swine anterior pituitaries, when injected into the newts 14 days after hypophysectomy.
    4. The residue of 40% ethanol extraction of frog anterior pituitaries seems to contain some substances, which is synergistic with the crude LH and FSH of frog and salmon anterior pituitaries and antagonistic with those of swine and fowl ones in effect of the ovulation of hypophysectomized newts.

    1. Effects of thyroxine upon succinic dehydrogenase activities of kidney cortex, heart muscle, adrenal cortex and thyroid of dog are observed in wide range of hormone concentration with the use of improved Thunberg technique.
    2. Diphasic actions of thyroxine according to the hormone concentration upon the enzyme activities are found out in all organs examined.
    3. The hormone concentrations which cause maximum augmentation of succinic dehydrogenase activities, are 1.5×10-6M for kidney cortex, 1.2×10-6M for heart muscle, 2×10-6M for thyroid and 3×10-6M for adrenal cortex.

    1) The new assay method of glucagon, an improved slice mcthod referred as slice-homogenates method, is proposed which is characteristic for the small variation of error seen in the glucose output, and which provides some evidence the mechanism of glucagon action.
    2) The inhibitory action of insulin for glucagon activity is suggested in the affirmative.

The sensitivities of rats, mice and chicks to acetone-dried cephalic lobe powder of anterior pituitary from W. L. cocks were compared in order to determine the highest sensitive bio-assay method for avain GTH.
Since the chick showed the highest sensitivity to avain GTH in three species of assay animal, the chick assay method is adequate to use as qualitative assay for avain GTH.
The response-line of chick testes to avain GTH was determined, and it was found that the chick testes response in terms of increase-rate showed a straight line relationship to dosage of avain pituitary powder. Therfore, the chick assay method is able to avail as quantitative assay for avian GTH.
Moreover, effect of the time of injection on responsiveness of the chick testes was examined, and the time of first injection during the period from 12 to 24 hrs. after hatching might have no influence on the degree of response.

By the use of various liver function tests, it was found that slight or moderate hepatic disabilities which seemed to be due to chronic lesions such as circhosis and chronic hepatitis was noticeable. In patients of hyperthyroidism hepatic disabilities were found 75 per cent and in patients of primary myxedema they were found in all of them and cured after successful treatment.
Hepatomegary is the most striking sign of liver damage and shows a tendency to be related to the grade of basal metabolic rate in hyperthyroidism.
Half quantitative estimation of urobilinogen in the urine is the most convenient and simple screening test for hepatic disabilities in hyperthyroidism and myxedema.
There is some relation between the grade of basal metabolic rates and the number of abnormal liver function tests;all the patients whose basal metabolic rates are below 30 per cent have no sign of liver damage and then as the basal metabolic rates increases the number of abnormal liver function tests increases the number of abnormal liver function tests increase gradually.
Hyperbilirubinemia is usually mild and rare as it has been said so.
Excretory function examined by utilization of bromsulphalein test is rather hard to be injured in hyperthyroidism.
In simple goiter, it seems to be the rule that there is no liver damage unless there are any complications.

Using rats of Wistar strain, the effect of pituitary hormones excepting TSH on I131 uptake by the thyroid (2 hrs. value) was investigated with the following results:
When ACTH was administered to adult male rats, it decreased I131 uptake by the thyroid.
None of FSH, LH and LTH produced in young adult virgin rats, remarkable change in thyroid uptake of I131 and serum I131. In this case both FSH and LH caused significant increase in the weight of the ovary, but not LTH.
Growth hormone elicited in adult male rats significant decrease in thyroid uptake of I131, tended to decrease serum I131, and produced significant increase in the weight of the parotid and mandibular glands.
Vasopressin produced in adult male rats significant increase in thyroid uptake of I131 and tended to decrease serum I131.
