The coagulating power of emulsion and emulsoid is considered to be concerned with the interfacial tension between the disperse phase and medium, or with the difference of the densities of both phase and medium, and the increase in the interfacial tension or the difference of the densities is caused no doubt by the imbibition of the disperse particles. Therefore the gel which imbibes more medium, will separate more liquid by syneresis. The alkali concentration of the separated liquid increases with the progress of syneresis, but this increase is not proportional to the increase in the amount of the separated liquid, and the alkali concentration increases gradually after the separation of liquid comes to an end. It is therefore considered that the decomposition of viscose proceeds during syneresis independently, becoming the cause of the irreversibility of the coagulation of viscose.
The syneresis of viscose is well expressed by the formula proposed fundamentally by Liepatoff under any conditions of temperature and concentration.
