A manganese nodule collected from the surface of the ocean-floor was investigated with the use of X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, infrared absorption and differential thermal analysis. It was also investigated by chemical analysis and contact chromatographic print method. The results were compared with the data on the previously reproted manganese nodule found at a 3-meter deep core.
They showed no remarkable differences, except for the following points: 1) On the X-ray powder diffraction pattern, the surface sample showed 7Å and 10Å lines, but, the core sample did not. 2) On the contact chromatographic print of Ni, the surface sample showed a homogeneous distribution pattern, while the core sample did not.
The authors discuss the differences between the two samples and the source of their manganese components.
