The phonemic system of the Ch'ieh Yün (A. D. 601) has been cleared on the whole by the various studies after the appearance of Prof. Karlgren's fundamental work.
There are still, however, some weak points left in it. Some of them are the questions of “Double Rimes of the II Divission”(皆:佳, etc.) and “Double Initials of the III: IV Divisions”(支
3:支
4, etc.) which the writer is going to discuss in this paper.
Having examined the Chinese Characters representing the Sanskrit phonetic values in the synchronous data (several translations of the Saddharma-pundarika in the Sui and T'ang Dynasies), the writer has tried to solve the questions. As the results, the writer has found the next points:
1) The retroflex Sanskrit vowels
a, e(ai) and
i correspond regularly to the Chinese rimes佳, 皆and支
3・脂
3 respectively.
2) The common feature between the two seems not to be the retroflexion of the blade or tip, but the rise of the middle part of tongue.
