The method of qualitative spectrophotometric analysis of thiuram and dithiocarbamate-type accelerators has been examined.
As rubber, of which vulcanisation has been accelerated by accelerators of this type, contains zinc dithiscarbamate, the authors extracted this compound with benzene or carbon tetrachloride, treated the extract with 1 % aqueous solution of CuSO
4 containing 15 % of Na
2SO
4, obtained copper dithiocarbamate, tried on it chromatographic separation with silica gel as adsorbent and with a mixture of 0.5 part of ethyl ether and 99.5 parts of car bon tetrachloride as developer, measured ultraviolet absorption spectra of the separated product, and thus established the method of qualitative analysis of accelerators of this type.
The usual methods of analysis were chiefly based on spot-test, and with these methods it was impossible to identify the accelerator, though it was possible to confirm that thiuram-type accelerators or dithiocarbamate-type accelerators were compounded with the presnt method. However, the identification can be left in records by absorption spectra, and the detection can be made with high sensitivity without being hindered by other organic compounding ingredients.
