Several phosphorus compounds were examined as curing agents for liquid hydroxyl-terminated 1, 4-polybutadiene (HT-PB).
Phosphorous pentoxide (P
2O
6) and polyphosphoric acid (approx. H
6P
4O
13) yielded partially cross-linked polymers because of their poor compatibility and extreme reactivity with HT-PB. Phosphoric acid yielded poorly cross-linked polymers because of its low reactivity. On the contrary, a homogeneously cross-linked elastomer was obtained by use of pyrophosphoric acid (H
4P
2O
7). The mechanical properties of the elastomer filled with carbon black (15vol.%) were as follows;
HS=45,
M100=21kgf/cm
2,
TB=37kgf/cm
2 and
EB=135%.
In addition, the cross-linking mechanism of this system was also discussed.
