The effects of silane coupling agent on the mechanical properties of PVC-Xonotlite mixture system were investigated. 1wt. % of Shinetsu-kagaku KBM-602 as silane coupling agent was applied on Xonotlite.
The treated materials showed an improved reinforcement in the tensile strength, but a drop in the elongation compared with non-treated materials. On the other hand, only a slight difference in the impact strength was observed between the treated materials and the non-treated materials. These results show a fairly good approximation to the theoretical results analized by L. E. Nielsen on such a composite system which exhibits perfect adhesion on the surface between filler and matrix. Therfore, it may be thought that the silane coupling agent has a fairly good effect of improving adhesion between PVC and Xonotlite.
Then, a time and temperature dependence of the tensile strength was investigated. The master curves of the treated materials in spite of a decrease in the elongation indicate rubber like properties rather than those of the non-treated materials.
