JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe co-telomers containing peroxide linkages on the side chain and chlorine atom on its chain ends, were synthesized by the radical co-telomerization of styrene and methacryroyl-oxyethyl-t-butylperoxycarbonate with carbon tetrachloride as a telogen. The molecular weight and the concentration of active oxygen of the co-telomers could be controlled by regulating the fraction of co-monomers and telogen. These co-telomers were able to proceed the rapid vulcanizatin reaction of SBR under ordinal conditions and the tensile properties of vulcanizates showed higher value than one with dicumyl-peroxide. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe amount of curvature of synchronous belt cords was investigated to understand the fatigue failure mechanism of synchronous belts. At the first step, the curvatures of cords were measured under various mating conditions of belts and pulleys. Then, we analysed the amounts of curvature using a simple mechanical model. The belts used in this study were round-tooth (STPD) with 8mm tooth pitch for high torque drives of automotive engines. The cords were constructed from eleven stranded glass filaments. One stranded glass filament was made of 600 glass fibers. The processing compound of the cords was RFL.
The distributions of curvature were measured along the belt axis. Though the distributions were different between driving and driven sides, the maximum amounts of curvature were almost equal at the both sides. Moreover, the experimental results clearly showed that the maximum amounts of curvature were almost directly proportional to the belt tight side tension, and were inversely proportional to the outside diameter of pulley.
We then proposed a simple mechanical model to explain the experimental results. The effects of tight side tension and distributed loading at the working flank were considered in the model. The analytical results succesfully explained the experimental results.View full abstractDownload PDF (856K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe article compared the effect of heat aging with that of radiation induced degradation of ethylene-propylene copolymer pure vulcanized. Co-60 γ ray was irradiated to samples at room temperature. Dose rate was 1.0kGy/h. Total dose was 50kGy and 96kGy. The rate constant of chain scission of irradiated samples by heat was independent on dose (irradiation time) and was found to be ten times higher than that of non-irradiated. Heat aging was performed in air oven kept at the constant temperatures ranged from 80 to 140°C. The rate constant of the chain scission increases with the heat aging time at all the temperatures. The results suggest that irradiation consumes the antioxidant agents added during polymer production process by the energy transfer from polymer to antioxidant agents. After the consumption of the agent, the rate of scission increases remarkably. On the other hand, heat degrades polymer and antioxidant agent at the same time. With increase the period of heataging time, the effect of antioxidant agent decreases and the rate of scission reaction inreases.View full abstractDownload PDF (639K) -
