    The heat aging behavior of silica filled natural rubber vulcanizate was compared with that of carbon black filled vulcanizate, using an air oven operating at 100°C. In the absence of antioxidant, the reduction rate in tensile strength (TB) of the silica filled vulcanizate during the aging test was found to be similar to that of the carbon black filled vulcanizate. In the case of elongation at break (EB), the reduction rate of the carbon black filled vulcanizate was higher than that of the silica filled vulcanizate. In the presence of an antioxidant, the decrease in TB and EB of the silica filled vulcanizate was very much lower than that of the carbon black filled vulcanizate. In addition to the conventional protection against chain scission and crosslink breakage of the polymer during thermal aging, the antioxidant in the silica filled vulcanizate appeared to have also changed the crosslinking structure of the polymer, as shown by the changes in sol content, crosslinking density and structure. It seemed that the silanol group on silica surface could activate the antioxidants, such as 2-mercaptbenzimidazole (MBI) to function as a secondary antioxidant.

    Styrene-butadiene-styrene triblock copolymer (SBS) composites dispersed with organoclay (stearyl ammonium-modified montmollironite, C18-Mt) were prepared by the melt-mixing method, and the solution-mixing (as-cast and melt-press) methods. The structures of the composites were evaluated using X-ray diffractmeter (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and tensile properties of the composites were examined.
    The composites by the melt-mixing method have partially intercalated structure. In the composites, large agglomerates (about 30μm) and small aggregates (several hundred nm) were observed. Whereas, the composites with less than 3wt% C18-Mt by the as-cast method have intercalated structure, and those with more than 5wt% C18-Mt have intercalated structure after melt-pressing at 130°C. In the composites, small particles (about 1μm) were dispersed uniformly. As the results of DMA, it was found that C18-Mt inhibited polystyrene aggregate in the composites by the melt-press method. Tensile moduli of the composites by preparing the melt-press method were higher than those of the composites by the melt-mixing method and increased with increasing C18-Mt content. Tensile properties at break of the composites by the both methods decreased with increasing C18-Mt content compared with SBS control.

    Effects of deformation history and surface activity of carbon black on viscoelastic behavior of carbon black filled rubbers were investigated. Storage modulus (G') decreased by the repeated strain sweeps in the strain region of γ=0.001∼0.4. The change in G' depends on maximum strain, γ max. As the γ max increases, the G' in the small strain region drops. The samples showed recovery in G' by being kept at a given temperature. The degree of recovery in G' was found to depend on the temperature and the surface activity of carbon black. The degree of recovery in G' for graphitized carbon black filled compound which has weak interaction between polymer and filler, is higher compared to the nongraphitized one. The recovery behavior in G' for graphiitzed carbon black was found to be due to viscosity of rubber for matrix.

    The PSA functions without the need for either a physical or chemical change to take place. Its unique design provides enough potential deformability and wettability so that the necessary intimate contact to a surface can be achieved, yet there is enough internal strength, or cohesion, within the adhesive for it to be able to resist any moderate separation forces. The behavior of PSA can be reduced to three fundamental and interconnected physical properties: adhesion, tack, and holding power.
    In the case of PSAs, surface energy this is the means to obtain the intimate contact necessary to form a bond. And, it is known that peel adhesion increases with increasing adhesive thickness and levels off at some thickness. The stresses are transmitted through the adhesive to the backing. The adhesive is deformed and the force required to deform the adhesive contributes to the measured peel force. So, in the PSA tape, the bulky physical properties of PSA are the control factor of the adhesive properties.

    The surface treatment of glass beads, chosen as model filler, was carried out using four kinds of silane coupling agents with multilayer coverage. The silanes used have aminopropyl or methacryloxypropyl group, and two or three alkoxy groups. The amount of silane detected on the bead surface was 4-6 times of that required for the monolayer coverage. Using these treated beads, the effects of the organofunctional group and the number of alkoxy groups of silanes on the mechanical properties of the bead-filled poly(vinyl chloride), chosen as typical ductile polymer, were investigated. As a result, the yield stress was improved by the surface treatment, and was higher in the silane having aminopropyl group than in that having the methacryloxypropyl group. The surface treatment with silanes having two alkoxy groups was more effective than those having three alkoxy groups. However, the elongation at break decreased by the surface treatment in the inverse order.
