Rubber hose are used in many places, such as electric appliances, house equipments, vehicles and ships, agriculture, forestry, fisheries industries, food industries, mining and manufacturing, engineering works and construction industries, etc., and indispensable as the functional components for transportation of fluids (gas, liquid, powder and the lump, etc.).
The demand for rubber hoses is increasing recently along with the recovery of business after a sluggish time. On the other hand, development of environmentally-friendly new products and improvement of the products are being continued reflecting a recent rise of the global environment protection movement and the demand for improvement of safety, reliability, and durability from the customers. General-purpose hose is included in ‘others’ category among three categories (rubber hose for the high pressure, those for cars, those for others) classified by Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry for statistics.

Many joints exist in the huge concrete structures. These joints tend to be a weak point of the concrete structures. Especially the leakage of water from the joints in an underground structure and a water processing structure causes the decrease of durability of the structures. Many running costs are needed to prevent the leakage of water and to maintain the durability of the structure. Therefore, seal of the joints is very important.
This paper describes seal materials in a construction joint and an expansion joint to the concrete structures.

Oil seals are one of the most outstanding component parts of sealing devices in terms of costs, quality, and performance. Oil seals play an important role in the running of various machines in a stable state over a long period of time. With automobiles becoming more and more high performance, the technical demands on seals are also diversifying. In particular, demands are changing from “high performance” such as high output, long life, reduced exhaust, low fuel consumption to “eco-friendliness” by the effective use of resources and “driving safety and comfort”. This report describes representative rubber materials NBR, HNBR, ACM, VMQ, and FKM important as components of seal products, discusses methods of enhancing performance in terms of heat resistance, cold resistance, friction and wear, and fuel resistance, as well as development trends of rubber materials against the technical trends of automobiles.
