The direct adhesion of EPDM compound to Al plate during peroxide curing on the bases of the molecular adhesive method has been investigated. The treatment of Al plate with the ethanol solution of molecular adhesives, 6-(3-triethoxysilylpropyl)amino-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-dithiol (TES) gave the TES-linked Al plates by the following three processes such as a immersion process of Al plate in the solution, an adsorption process of TES to OH groups on Al plate, and a linking process between TES and Al plate. The direct adhesion of EPDM compound to Al plate by these processes indicated a significant effect on the peel strength, because they induce the formation of interfacial bond between EPDM compound and TES-linked Al plate. Ingredients in EPDM compound had also an important influence on the formation of interfacial bond, it means thiol groups on the linked-TES did not react directly with EPDM molecular chains in the presence of dicumyl peroxide (DCP). In the EPDM compounds, ingredients such as DCP and m-phenylenebismaleimide (m-BMI) were essential for the direct adhesion of EPDM to TES-linked Al plate. The Al/EPDM adherends obtained had good heat resistance at 120°C but decreased the peel strength with aging time at 95°C in water. The poor water resistance is estimated to be dependant for the corrosion of Al plate.

Shear-induced instability of bilayer membrane systems has attracted much attention. One of the most interesting shear effects is a shear-induced structural transition from the lamellar to the multilamellar vesicle. In this review, we show two topics related to the non-equilibrium structural formation phenomena under shear; the influence of the triblock copolymer on the shear-induced multilamellar vesicle formation, and the shear quench-induced discontinuous size change of the multilamellar vesicle. In the first topic, we study the effect of the triblock copolymer on the shear-induced lamellar-to-multilamellar vesicle formation. Shear-induced multilamellar vesicle formation behavior is quite sensitive to the interaction between grafted polymer chains and surfactant bilayer membranes. Entropy based contribution to the modulus of bilayer controls the shear-induced multilamellar vesicle formation behavior. In the second topic, we study how the kinetic pathway on the size change process of the multilamellar vesicle is decided under shear. These studies will give us a hint how the soft matter systems change their structure under non-equilibrium states.

In recent, the reduction of rolling resistance of tires has become more significant in the tire industry, because it has close relation to the fuel consumption efficiency and CO2 emission of motor vehicles. Rolling resistance of tire is closely related to hysteresis loss properties of tire tread compounds. Dispersibility of filler is considered to affect hysteresis loss. Some styrene-butadiene rubbers with functional groups at chain ends have been developed by solution polymerization system (S-SBRs) to achieve good interaction with silica filler. They showed significant reduction in the hysteresis loss of silica reinforced compounds. Especially, the modified S-SBR with both primary amino group and alkoxysilyl group exhibited excellently lower hysteresis loss properties. In order to observe the dispersibility of silica in compounds with this modified S-SBR directly, the measurements of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and ultra small angle X-ray scattering (USAXS) were carried out. As the results, the excellent dispersion states of silica in the compounds with this modified S-SBR was observed, and we found that smaller size of silica aggregates could reduce the hysteresis loss to much lower level. This result coincided with those obtained by dynamic viscoelstic measurement.
