Single crystals of forsterite (Mg_2SiO_4) and olivine ((Mg_<1-x> Fe_x)2 SiO_4) were grown by the Czochralski method using an iridium crucible. Colorless and transparent crystals of forsterite up to 25 φ × 60 in size and 160 gr in weight were obtained. Olivine crystals were also prepared in a mixed gas flow of CO_2 and H_2. The crystals were pale brown in color and were contaminated with minute gas bubbles and inclusions.

Opal has been thought for many years as a gem stone which brings misfortune. This rumor has long been believed to have originated from a novel by Sir Walter Scott, Anne of Geierstein. However, this is not true. In reality, Scott used in his novel a superstition of his days that opal brings misfortune, and not in the reverse way. This superstition is probably originated from the brittle property and mysterious color of opal. In this papar, the history of the use of opal is described, followed by the description of the history of discovery and geological setting of opal mines, and a discussion on the definition and terminology of opal.

The contents of papers presented at the symposium on gemstones and gemmology held during the IMA meeting is also reviewed in some details. A working group on gemstones was initiated in IMA at this meeting.
