To evaluate the relationship between the development of plantar ulcer and nerve damage, the plantar region was histologically examined in the denervated animal due tothe desection of sciatic nerve. After denervation, the arteriolar lesions were developed in the early stage of secondweek in leg, foot-back and sole, and they were devided into the four grades by histological changes in the intima and media. After second week, the plantar ulcer was revealed, and increased in number afterfourth week. The ulcer formation was related with the arterial changes as intimal thickening andluminal stenosis. The eripheral nerve fibers were reduced in distribution, especially on the media ofarterial wall and in the dermis of plantar region after two weeks of denervation and afterthree weeks nerve fibers were completely disappeared in the wall of artery and the periarterial region. The author have observed that the arteriolar lesion was induced by the resection ofsciatic nerve may result in the formation of plantar ulcer which is similar to the ulcerof leprosy. So we concluded that the incurable plantar ulcer in leprosy might be promoted bythe vascular damage induced by peripheral nerve change.
