Most local guides believe that they understand ecotourism and that they have experiences in conducting ecotours (9.7 times on average). Ecotourism development in Pasu, however, was found not to be even at an early stage. The local guides are not ready to translate the interpretation into action in the field although they tend to overrate their understanding and knowledge of ecotourism. This great gap is attributed to lack of their actual interpretive skills and knowledge. This study proposes the creation of a local guide association in Pasu, which would have the four functions: (1) ecotourismprogramme development; (2) environmental conservation; (3) fund raising; and (4) negotiation and communication functions.
