In Japan, there are a lot of bridges connecting islands. Particularly in the Seto Inland Sea, several bridges are constructed near the narrow channels. When we pursue the safe operation of the vessels, we consider it important to analyze the masking features of the radar images of such bridges and the reflection intensity. In this study, we analyzed the features by the difference in the structure and the masking features along the direction of the width of the bridge and the reflection intensity about two bridges, in order to improve the safety of ships traffic. Conventionally, the radar reflection intensity of a small object such as a small ship has been evaluated by the maximum signal intensity in the image. In this study, we tried a new evaluation method for the radar reflection intensity of the connecting bridges those are huge and strong reflection structures, and we report the result.

When strong stress is continued, it becomes the negative thought. It is said to suffer from depression or an internal organs disease. In stress, the person may not have the recognition of the symptom. It is hard to sometimes notice an accident. In this article, I performed an attitude survey of the stress for sailors and I performed a heartbeat experiment and stress index analysis. And I compared the stress degree with the scene subjected to stress. As a result, the place where sailors were in danger was a narrow channel and a port. When the congested situation and view were small, the situation confirmed high stress. When there was the uneasiness of a collision, sailors grasped that a stress degree tended to become higher.

Risk-based maintenance (RBM) means that maintenance will be done according to the risk evaluation result, which is calculated by the probability of failure and the consequence of failure. RBM is often applied to some plants (oil refining plant, chemical plant etc...), but still few applied to vessels. IMC developed the RBM software for vessels in order to apply RBM to ship management, but the RBM calculation method and result is not enough to be verified. Therefore, we apply RBM to Hiroshima-Maru, and improve the RBM calculation method and result. In the future, we aim at the practical use of the RBM for vessels.

In learning the issue of vibration, it is important to know the essence of the various problems in resonance, natural frequency, natural vibration mode, and so on. However, it is really very hard to understand these phenomena. So, we started to develop the experimental equipment for the purpose of observing the vibration of mechanical systems. In this study, we developed a simple model of a playground swing with 2 degrees of freedom for teaching material. This swing is a compact folding type, so it's convenient to carry. In order to clarify how to use this swing, we simulated in eight patterns by using the software called DSS. As a result, the best way to swing this device was suggested.

However, it is really very hard to understand these phenomena. So, we started to develop the experimental equipment for the purpose of observing the vibration of mechanical systems, especially paying attention to resonance and natural vibration mode. In this study, an experimental equipment of torsional vibration system with three degrees of freedom was developed. By using this apparatus, we clearly observed the primary, secondary and tertiary resonances and natural vibration modes. The torsional vibration device using two springs was very effective to understand the difference in natural vibration modes. Furthermore, in order to verify the validity of this vibration system was simulated by using a software called DSS. The original motion pictures are open to the public on the Internet.

GPS is the most important device that is necessary to aid the automation of navigation. We have used a simple GPS receiver and an Arduino to pick up the necessary information from the satellite so the model ship can navigate with autopilot. A model ship is often more desirable than an actual ship for reason of low risk and it`s convenience to verify the result of experiments of navigation system. GPS information isn't obtained in an enclosed space such as model basin with wind tunnel which is often used for model ship experiments. Therefore, we decided the experimental place to be the sea as it is the most suitable environment for receiving GPS information. Therefore, we propose development of experiment system for model ship at sea. This paper introduces that making of model ship and GPS information acquisition software have been developed as a basis of this system.

This article is attempt to identify how to make a good goal in large classes that we usually do in English lessons at school. In junior high schools and senior high schools in Japan, they offer small classes to make more communications in detail. However, in this country, there have been so many experts of English communication such as interpreters, college professors and international business people. How did they improve their language ability? The author has taught English for over 20 decades to find out what the best way was to make students be enthusiastic in learning English as a second language and suggests the possibility for a sustainable effort of communication between instructors and learners to accomplish the latter’s achievement of English ability.

This research, a part of the COC Programs of Institute of Technology Hiroshima, investigates the background of the local folklores related to such toponyims as “Saino-kawara (shores of the Styx)” and “Hasami-iwa (pincer rocks)” in Mount “Kannno-mine (divine peak).” These folkloric tales are archived in the collections of Osaki-cho Local Museum of History and Culture. At the same time, the research takes a look at some administrative issues for activating our town. “Saino-kawara” and “Hasami-iwa”, located around the peak, seem to have played a role of boundary between our ordinary world and sacred area of spirits living on even after death. And it is possible that, through this tautonymy “Saino-kawara,” insulars regarded “Kannno-mine” itself as a kind of sanctuary where the dead’s souls would remain. By the way, in my opinion, these names can be relatively new, and don’t have a long history ; they appeared only in the middle of the Edo era or later. Historical-cultural resources like them should serve to promote our local town. So the administration should think of the preservation and wider announcement of these resources for the future of our town.

This paper proposes a way of reducing the number of colors contained in a JPEG image and remove block noise at the same time. The main purpose of this research is converting a kind of color images, such as Tokyo Metro map, to easily recognizable ones. When the number of colors in a color image is appropriately small, we can assign different gray level for each color then convert it to gray scale image without any information loss. But if the number of colors are not small, the converted monochrome images are not easy to recognize the contents. Most of colorblinds can recognize some different colors, so we propose new converting way to give some colors to the converted gray scaled image.

The importance of biological diversity has been world-widely recognized, because, depending on and linking up with each other in natural environment, many kinds of living things make up different ecological systems. Hiroshima Prefecture declares one project titled “Rings of life for the future! Hiroshima plan (Hiroshima Strategy of Biological Diversity)” and has started to carry it out. Besides this ordinance, the prefectural assembly decided on Hiroshima Principal Plan for Environment, regarding preservation of bio-diversity as a very important policy. As the result, “Red Data Book Hiroshima – Endangered Wild Plants and Animals in Hiroshima Prefecture” was published in 2011. The plants and animals mentioned here are the objects to be preserved urgently for keeping diversity. Osakikamijima is an isolated island and the plants on this island haven’t been researched in detail. This paper is a research report about the rare and endangered plants of Osakikamijima.

This paper considers the star-navigation of the Polynesian traditional navigation. Nainoa Thompson, who was a current Hawaiian navigator on the ancient model canoe “HOKURE’A”, used Polynesian traditional navigation at the Pacific Ocean. He showed four latitude observation methods and four direction observation methods under this navigation at ocean. These methods using modern celestial navigation were inspected on this paper. He said that the synchronous star setting of Canopus and Rigel showed our position of latitude 13 degrees north. It was confirmed by the setting amplitude that it was right.

Ship utilization has at large scale disaster recently received broad attention owing to rational and effective disaster recovery for near the coastal area. However, these methods have some limitations. For example, this system cannot be used if the wharf is damaged and the ship is not moored. Also, when the ship first enters the port, much information is needed and the difficulty level is high. Therefore, the captain will refrain from it. In this study, the power supply system using the vessel at anchor the ship that do not use the quay is presented. The paper deals with possibility of the proposed method at large scale disaster, the authors conducted a full-scale experiment.

When a large-scale disaster have occurred the island and urban coastal areas damage to the infrastructure is huge and first aid is apt to delay. After the disaster by focusing on the often a ship to be forced to anchoring of outside the port. In this study, the power supply system using the vessel at anchor the ship that do not use the quay is presented. The paper deals with the dynamic tension of anchoring vessel connected with underwater cable by model scale experiment. The using Strong and heavy cable such as underwater cable protected by iron wire make it clear that the cable suppress the movement of a ship. However, the Electricity can be carried more efficiently by specifying a cable with a large radius and heavy. The authors will devise a method to determine the optimum radius for safety and efficiency.
