    Ion plating technique is a well-established technology for the production of protective coatings on a wide range of substrates. Thermal cycling failure characteristics of TiN films coated on the surface of SUS304 were examined. As a results, it was found that the thermal characteristic of the TiN films in Ar was better than that of the films in air. Hardness of the films decreased from HV1500 to HV800 by thermal cycling test in Ar. XPS analysis revealed the existence of TiO2, after TiN films were oxidized during thermal cycling test in air. As the number of thermal cycling in air increased, the weight of test piece increased gradually.

    Electromagnetic method is often used in order to monitor the thickness of thermal spray coating which is covered on the materials such as boiler tube for prevention of corrosion/erosion wear. Ni-Cr based self-fusing alloy apray coating can be measured by this method due to little ferrous characteristic. But it was found that this magnetic property was easily changed under high temperature environment, and increasing magnetic property resulted much underestimating of coating thickness. It was evident that this increase of magnetic characteristic was caused by increase of high Ni concentration parts during high temperature aging. This trend depended on the kind of spray powder, and the spray layer which had higher magnetic property at the beginnig showed that the high temperture aging led more increasing of magnetic property.
    It was concluded that the selection of spray powder was much important for quality control of Ni-Cr based self-fusing alloy spray coating using electromagetic thikcness tester.

    Bellows can reduce the reaction force at the supports, arising from the elongation of the piping systems. So, Bellows are used for the absorption of thermal expansion of piping in liquid and gas transportation systems. But, under high internal pressure, bellows elongate and make a large reaction force at the sipports.
    We quantatively examined these reaction forces at the supports caused by thermal expansion and internal pressure. Its results made clear that the reaction force due to internal pressure was much larger than the one due to thermal expansion. Therfore, we developed a few kinds of pressure balanced expansion joints. The present paper reports on the structure and mechanism of these devices.

    Elbows have been applied at bent portion of pressure piping. Recently bent pipes were developed to eliminate the welded joints of elbows. The section of elbows is different from that of bent pipes. Elbows and bent pipes have, in their bent portion, uniform and eccentric wall thickness, and round and oval contour, respectively. In this paper, we analyzed stress distribution of elbows and bent pipes being subjected to internal pressure. The effects of uniformity and ovality of the bent part on the stress distribution were investigated, using the elastic equations of thin film pipe and the finite element analysis (FEA). The results were as follows; (1) The uniformity affected the circumferential stress at the middle surface. (2) The ovality affected the circumferential stress at outer and inner surface, (3) The stress distribution of elbows and bent pipes at the middle surface can be estimated by using H. Lorenz formula.

    It is resumed that 14 gas holders in Hansin district were shaked more than 300 gal acceleration at ground level by the Hyogo-ken Nanbu Earthquake. These holders had no damages, so the excellent earthquake resistance of helders were proved.
    The reasons why no damages are according to the design tolerance and others as belows. (1) Holders have seismic countermeasures as swan neck. (2) Holders have steel structure near axial aymmetry and fine characteristic of stability, so have excellent earthquake resistance. (3) Foundation structures have enough earthquake resistance because annular, radial and cylindrical beams are adopted as parts of foundation. And foundation and supporting structures are connected firmly, so actual damping value is less than one used at design atage. (4) Actual value of parts are thicker and stronger than ones used at design stage. (5) All foundation of the holder aren't shaken uniformly because the phase of earthquake wave is slipped at each points of large foundation. (6) If the ground is liquefied, input ratio of wave from ground to foundation is reduced.
    When we consider that the holders in Hansin district had been designed, manufactured and maintained by Recommended Practice for Spherical Gas Holder by Japan Gas Association (JGA), we confirm gas holders by this guideline have excellent earthquake resistance.

    Thermal power plants occupy a fairly high percentage in power generating plants. More than half of these are aged, and still play a very important role in power generation. These are well maintained and their lives are extended by time based inspections and life assessment technologies. In this report, the maintenance technologies are briefly described for the main components of thermal power plants, boilers and turbines.

    Emergency drinking water storage tanks provide drinking and/or fire fighting water when a severe earthquake disrupts water supplies. Kwasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. has designed and manufactured two types of tanks, horizontal and vertical cylinder, since 1985. This paper introduces an outline of these tanks wiich acquired Type-certification from Fire Protection Equipment and Safety Center of Japan last year.

    Natural gas is usually supplied to thermal power plants using high-pressure piping. Before being fed to the boilers, it is reduced from high to low pressure. Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. has recently delivered a pressure reducing system capable of handling a very large pressure difference to Tokyo Electric Power Company, Ltd.
