    A method is proposed to estimate the effect of residual stress on fracture stress by using a simple model consisting of the Dugdale model and the Beremin model. There are known two contradictory rules in the residual stress effect, i. e. the K additive rule and the conservative principle rule, which are unified on the present method consistently and shown to hold in each proper condition. It is examined which rule is the case in the working condition of the current welded steel structures. Effect of warm prestressing is also discussed.

    Supposing corrosion of oil storage tank base-plate built on sand bed and on asphalt bed, laboratory corrosion tests in sand and in atmosphere were carried out. Utilizing extreme value statistics technique, analysis of corrosion behavior in sand was carried out as reported in our previous report. In this work, reproducibility of corrosion was inspected by comparison of scale parameters in extreme value distribution between field data and laboratory data. And as for the case when scale parameter being almost equal, acceleration rate of corrosion in laboratory to that in field was calculated from the parallel displacement ratio to each other.
    As a result, the laboratory corrosion test method, which can reproduce corrosion of oil storage tank base-plate in field, was established. Using this developed corrosion test method, corrosion of oil storage tank base-plate in field can be estimated quantitatively. And it would also be efficient for absolute evaluation of countermeasures not only being in present but also being under development for the future.

    Some gaskets are used in many device, for example, rotary compressor, valve and so on. The device is inspected and internal parts of gaskets etc. are exchanged periodically. The time cycle for inspection and exchange that have decided empirically before.
    It has decided not to understand the exact life time for some gaskets. So, at this time, we tested for the compressed asbestos fibers sheet gaskets (CAF) on the temperature of 200°C. As the results, we tried to estimate and made sure of the life time more exactly for CAF. The temperature of 200°C which we adopted is severe than the used temperature in fact.
    The life time for CAF is estimated about 18 years on 200°C.
    We had been tested relaxation and seal performance for metal gaskets before. So we confirmed to be able to estimate the life time with the results of both.
    It is possible that we estimate the life time for CAF and the other non-asbestos gaskets, too, with the results of as same as metal gaskets.
    But we can't consider effects of bolt stress and pipe stress at this time. The life time for CAF is expected to be shorten than 18 years in fact. There need to examine more totally for bolted flanged joint in future. So we are going to confirm for these effects with finite element method etc.

    With the steady increase of demand for city gas in urban area and its periphery, the distribution capacity of city gas from LNG plant in the coastal areas to consumers inland through existing pipelines is expected to reach its limitation in the near future in Japan. The introduction of new storage technology with following benefits in comparison with gas holders, which has been commonly used in Japan,
    •Large storage capacity
    •Low storage cost per effective storage gas volume
    •Possibility to store gas near consumers in the inland
    is expected to enhance the efficiency of existing infrastructure, and thereby reduce the requirements for large amount of investment in additional production facilities and pipelines. As such technology, the lined rock gas storage technology is proposed, in which the surrounding rock is expected to support the high pressure of storage gas.
    The objective of this study is to investigate the lined rock gas storage technology as a new form of storing gas energy and to evaluate the practicability of the technology for city gas service business.

    Kocaeli earthquake in Turkey occurred from a part of North Anatolian Fault. Oil storage tanks at TUPRAS Refinery closed to the fault suffered severe damage, that is, great fires and sinking of floating roofs of oil storage tanks broke out, caused by liquid sloshing which was generated by long-period strong ground motions. Fires continued for one week until liquid in tanks were burnt.
    In the ChiChi earthquake in Taiwan, damage such as buckling of floating roofs, rupturing of shell plates, buckling of shell-to-roof joints, and deformation of equipment of tanks, was also caused by liquid sloshing, although the tank sites were located far from the epicenter and the peak ground accelerations were about 100 gal. Most severe damage was rupture of the lowest course shell plate, where the lower end of the guide pole was supported. This tank lost its content which then spilled into inside dike, and contaminated the soil.
