    Boilers and pressure vessels are used extensively in chemical plants. But we need to investigate safety of the boilers and pressure vessels, which are used for a long time and affected by the deterioration. Therefore in this study, the effects of local wall thinning on strength and fracture behaviors of boilers and pressure vessels were investigated. Fracture strengths of local wall thinned pressure vessels were calculated by elasto-plastic analysis, using finite element method. And we simulated various types of local wall thinning that can occur on pressure vessel's surface. The configurations of the eroded area were l =30∼400mm in diameter and d =0. 9∼4. 9mm in thickness. We investigated the internal pressure of allowable stress initiation, yield stress initiation, plastic collapse initiation and crack initiation for the effects of strength and fracture behaviors. Failure mode map was constructed for boilers and pressure vessels based on the results of element analyses in order to investigate the effect of failure behaviors.

    Validitiy of the Beremin model is examined by studying the distribution of brittle fracture initiation sites in fracture toughness test specimens. Necessity for modification of the Beremin model is shown. It is suggested that application of the Beremin model should be made prudentially unless some type of similarity in the stress and⁄or strain field exists among the relevant experimental conditions.

    The environmental degradation of GFRP⁄stainless-steel adhesive joints exposed to high temperatures, high humidity, and submerged in water was studied. After the adhesive joints were degraded, fatigue tests were carried out on the joints at room temperature. The experimental results showed that short-term exposure to high temperature (85°C) or high temperature and high humidity (50°C∼60°C, 85%) slightly increased the fatigue strength of the adhesive joints. However, the joints'fatigue strengths degraded under high temperatures and high humidity decreased with increasing degradation time. Furthermore, the joints'fatigue strengths submerged in water at high temperatures is lower than that under the same high temperatures and high humidity. As a result of these experiments, it is clear that the effect of moisture on adhesive joints is very large. Furthermore, an evaluation method for degradation durability of adhesive joints was developed. The relationship between degradation temperature and degradation time was calculated. The retention ratio of fatigue strength on adhesive joints was evaluated using arrehenius plots.

    There are some cases in which towers and piping with insulation have become externally corroded after long usage. The FFS (Fitness for Service) code based on the p-M method proposed by Konosu et al. can be used to assess the structural integrity of towers and piping with local thin areas simultaneously subjected to internal pressure and external bending moment.
    However, in order to assess structural integrity by the p-M method, it is necessary to evaluate the bending moment due to earthquake, etc. , at the location with the local thin area concerned.
    There is an earthquake resistant design code published by the High Pressure Gas Safety Institute of Japan (KHK) in which details relating to seismic loads are given.
    In this paper, the seismic moment for various towers is calculated as per (1) static coefficient method, (2) modified static coefficient method and (3) modal analysis method etc. By comparing these results, the simplified equation based on the static coefficient method and the modified static coefficient method is proposed.

    In order to optimize the maintenance of plants, such as chemical or petrochemical one, concentration of resource on effective parts is important and one candidate for this is the introduction of risk based inspection (RBI) . However, one of the subjects for the introduction of RBI in my country is a development of damage database. Risk assessment is done by multiplying consequence with probability of failure (PoF) and thus the PoF data play an important role. If we have no database concerning PoF, other databases such as those of reference or oversea countries have to be referred. In this case, those data might not be suitable to Japanese situation. Therefore, development of Japanese own database is quite important. This paper deals with the failure of pipes and shows some points concerning how to develop the PoF database.
