    The sealing performance of flange connection was examined using Helium (He) gas leak detector in relation to the axial bolt force, F, and gasket characteristics. Three dimensional finite element method (FEM) was employed to obtain the stress distribution on the gaskets and the deformation behavior of the flange connection, where the former was confirmed by the pressure detection film. For the FEM analysis, compressive stress and strain responses of three types of gasket were measured by impression test using flat round shape indenter with the diameter of 15mm. The gasket stress distribution was developed by flange rotation enhanced by the increase in the axial bolt force, which resulted in the higher stress on the outer portion of gaskets. The He-gas leak tests of flange connections were performed under constant F as well as distributed F conditions. Maximum gasket stress on the radial direction and the maximum gasket compression displacement were correlated with the leakage from gasket surface and penetration, respectively.

    In order to understand the difference between SSRT (slow strain rate test) and CSRT (conventional strain rate test) in susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement, published TDS (thermal desorption spectroscopy) curves were studied on SCM435 steel that were quenched and tempered to 1300 MPa class tensile strength. The peak temperature of TDS curves of SSRT was higher than that of CSRT, and curves of SSRT swelled at higher temperatures than the peak. All the TDS curves were successfully decomposed using Gaussian distribution to sub peaks of lattice hydrogen, and hydrogen trapped by dislocation, grain boundary, vacancy and vacancy cluster. Certain amount of hydrogen was trapped by vacancy and vacancy cluster that were formed under elastic loading of CSRT and SSRT. Hydrogen was transferred from dislocation trap to grain boundary trap in case of SSRT. As the grain boundary fracture is prevailing in SSRT, hydrogen trapping by grain boundary was judged to be more important for understanding hydrogen embrittlement of high strength martensitic steels than formation of vacancy and vacancy cluster.

    State of hydrogen in V-bearing steel was explored by peak separation with Gaussian distribution on published hydrogen desorption curves (TDS curves) for Mn-0. 3%V, Mn-1%V and Cr-Mo-0. 35%V steels. As is well known, two kinds of hydrogen traps were formed, which were corresponding to V-containing carbides in different morphology. Including the ordinary hydrogen traps, i. e. lattice, dislocation and grain boundary traps that are common to ferritic steels, the TDS curves from the above-mentioned three V-bearing steels were systematically separated into Gaussian sub-peaks. Although most hydrogen is trapped by two hydrogen traps relating to V carbide, hydrogen is still shared by dislocation and grain boundary traps. The alloying of V played a role of decreasing the of grain boundary trap. This decrease is more notable for Cr-Mo-V steel than Mn-V steel, owing to the changes in carbide structure and morphology by V alloying. Cr-Mo-V steel has another feature:The peak temperature became more elevated for weaker and lower temperature hydrogen traps, probably because of suppressed diffusion rate of lattice hydrogen in Cr-Mo based steels.

    Floating roofs are used in large cylindrical storage tanks to prevent evaporation of oil. The single-deck floating roof considered herein consists of a thin circular plate, referred to as a ”deck”, attached to a buoyant ring with a hollow rectangular cross section referred to as a ”pontoon”. The deck plate is deformed to be created waves and is subjected to cyclic bending due to the wind load. Since this leads to the initiation of fatigue cracks at the welded joints, it is important to understand the wave characteristics in the deck plate. The authors reported a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis and a sloshing response analysis of a cylindrical storage tank with the single-deck floating roof under a wind load in three another papers. In this paper, the vibration characteristics of the wave in the deck plates is described according to the previous three papers.

    On December 11, 2012, a buried natural gas transmission pipeline ruptured in a sparsely populated area in Sissonville, West Virginia, USA. The released high pressure natural gas ignited immediately, resulting in an explosion. Three houses were destroyed by the fire, and several other houses were damaged. There were no fatalities or serious injuries. The cause of pipeline rupture was external corrosion of the pipe wall due to deteriorated coating and ineffective cathodic protection. The National Transportation Safety Board issued the report on the cause of this accident. This paper describes the accident according to this report.
