Metallurgical factors controlling the shape parameter of probability function, m, in the local approach are examined on the past experimental results. It is shown that size distribution of cementite and angular distribution between cleavage plane and tensile direction cannot explain the observed large value of m. Fraction of cracked cementite is suggested to play an important role in control of the m value.

Austenitic stainless steel plate (SUS316LN) has been used commonly for cargo tank of chemical tanker so far. For duplex stainless steel plate (SUS329J3L) , its nickel content is about half of that in austenitic stainless steel plate. Therefore if duplex stainless steel plate is applied to the cargo tank of chemical tanker, the usage of scarce nickel resource could be saved substantially.
In this study, for the application of duplex stainless steel plate (SUS329J3L) to the cargo tank of chemical tanker, fatigue tests by using butt welded joints of SUS329J3L steel plate and load-carrying and non-load-carrying full penetration cruciform welded joints of SUS329J3L steel plate and SUS316L-clad steel plate were carried out and the fatigue strength of each welded joint were evaluated. As the result, S-N curves underlying fatigue design criterion for welded joints with duplex stainless steel plate were obtained.
