Electric power companies will pay their attention to the load following capability and economical operation of a thermal power plant with once-through boilers. However conventional PID controllers embedded on DCSs cannot always give the optimum solution to such subjects. To cope with these problems, we have discussed a model-based advanced control system. Prior to study of the advanced control system, we develop a nonlinear system identification method based on the exogenous variable-dependent ARX model considering the characteristics of a power plant dynamics. We verify its effectiveness through simulation tests by using measurement data collected in the field tests and simulation tests with SIMULINK-based boiler-turbine dynamic models.

This paper describes a system we have developed to monitor parking spaces of a flat outdoor parking lot with a CCD camera installed in an elevated position. The system reports whether or not a vehicle is present in each individual space using image processing. The system operates under various weather conditions ranging from full daylight to artificial lighting at night. The system was applied to an actual outdoor parking lot, and the performance was evaluated by experiment under a various weather during day and night. As the result, the ratio of correct results was 99% or more in daytime. At night, the ratio of correct results was 85.1% to 96.8%. It was thought that the accuracy at night can be improved by taking into account the arrangement of the lighting, so that a recognition rate of 99% is achievable. From these results, the effectiveness of the developed system has been confirmed.

This paper introduces flexibility of SCOPE (System Configuration Of PowEr control system) which is a new architecture to realize flexible and reliable supervisory control for power systems. Energy Management Systems/Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (EMS/SCADA) systems are usually geographically distributed and have hierarchical operational organizations. They are continuously changing in accordance with various requirements and varying environments. Therefore, they should be flexible enough to adapt to those changes quickly SCOPE classifies programs in conventional electric power systems into three hierarchical layers, i.e Application dependent part, Power system dependent part and Computer system dependent part. The power system dependent part realizes flexibility for changing of power system equipment and operational organization; by introducing an enhanced abstract function of object oriented technology. Therefore, SCOPE architecture enables EMS/SCADA systems to be flexible, and also enables to develop efficiently and economically. Through developing and evaluating a SCOPE prototype system, it has been confirmed that the flexibility of EMS/SCADA systems had been improved.

We have proposed a personal identification system based on the front view face of isodensity maps, and the effectiveness of this method has been confirmed. For practical application however, a robust personal identification system adapted for the faces taken with various angles must be developed. In the proposed method, the 25 facial images which are taken with different angles are registered in the database as reference images. The similarity of an input image is first examined between all registered images and the three facial images, which are similar to the input image, are then extracted as the candidate facial images. The isodensity maps, which is expected to have the maximum similarity to the input image, is created by the interpolation between two candidate images and the input facial image is judged identical or not with the interpolated images. Computer simulation using 40 people shows 98.4% of correct discrimination accuracy. From the experimental results, the prospects of using this method are very encouraging.

In this paper, we focus minimum time optimal problems which have output and output-derivative constraints and propose a closed loop system design with “Optimal Look-up-Table (OLT) Controller” based on Genetic Algorithm. The OLT Controller uses an OLT as an upper or a lower bounds of an input which is produced by a feedback controller (PI controller). If the input is within the bounds, the suggested OLT controller works as same as the feedback controller; if the input is without the bounds, the OLT controller gives the optimal control according to the OLT. Thus, this approach would generate a sub-optimal but practical control.

In this paper, we propose the new system of information presentation by using only one PZT vibrator to transfer complex information through a tactile sensation. We thought about the technique which a modulated wave was used as for the output of the vibrator. 16 kinds of modulated wave vibration which sensitiviness was different from were configured as this result, and this vibration was configured in the 4×4 matrix-shaped. We did the recognition experiment of this 4×4 matrix and validated the information presentation which modulated wave vibration by only one tactile sensation stimulus component was used for.

For decision support under a multi-objective environment, it is effective to offer a Pareto optimal solution set with uniform distribution to the decision-maker. In this paper, a new optimization method for obtaining a Pareto optimal solution set with such uniform distribution is proposed. In order to overcome the difficulty of realizing this goal, the concept of cannibalism is introduced in BUGS (a bug-based search strategy using genetic algorithms). Introducing the concept of cannibalism achieves the uniform distribution of Pareto optimal solutions. A numerical experiment using typical continuous and discrete multi-objective optimization problems clarifies the usefulness of the proposed method.

The undulatory locomotion of nematode is investigated by the spatial-Fourier analysis of progressing body form. Motion pictures are taken digitally with a sampling frequency of 10 Hz over 10 sec. The dynamic features of behavior are visualized by plotting coefficients corresponding to the maximum power spectrum. The behavior of all nematodes is evaluated by a visual inspection every 2 sec, and divided into four “fundamental motions”; “travel”, “swing”, “mix”, and “rest”. Features of four motions are quantitatively calculated by applying the method in physiology. Firstly we calculated the areas of high and low frequency bands, H and L, respectively. Next the ratio H/Lwas averaged over every 2 sec. The averaged <H/L> ware corresponded to the four motions evaluated by observation in the same interval. <H/L> of the four motions are examined under food-rich and food-free conditions by the “F-test” at 5% significance. Those of four motions are significant between food-rich and food-free conditions.

To count the passing people through the gate of the buildings or the entertainment halls is considered important for the office security or the marketing researches. In this paper, an automatic counting method of the passing people through the gate by using a stereo camera is proposed. First, in the proposed method, the stereo images of the passers are obtained in series. As a next step, pixels on a measurement line which is set at right angle with the direction of movement of passers are picked up and arranged along the time axis. As a result, a space-time image which includes just the data of the passing people over the measurement line is generated. Next, in a similar manner, stereo space-time image is generated and the three dimensional information is extracted from a pair of stereo images. But by only a pair of space-time image, each moving direction of the passing people can not be recognized. Therefore, two measurement lines are set on the floor of the inside and outside of the gate. By detecting which line the person passes early, the moving directions of the passing people are recognized. Finally, the incoming persons and the outgoing persons could be measured by counting the people data with each hight data and direction information. In this paper, we describe the algorithm of counting the passing people using the stereo space-time images and show some experimental results obtained by using a simple experimental system to verify effectiveness of the proposed method.

Static inverse optimization problems here mean to estimate a positive semidefinite noncanonical quadratic criterion function which optimizes a given solution under predetermined constraints. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to static inverse optimization problems by the learning of neural networks. For obtaining a criterion function closest to a canonical one satisfying positive semidefiniteness, we propose two methods: one is a method of modifying eigenvalues and the other is a method of learning toward pseudo-diagonalization. Applications of the proposed method to real-world data on a wage problem well demenstrate its effectiveness.

Basic theory for minimizing the total length of cable installation route is investigated for broadband local loops that comprises feeder and distribution lines. Long term analyses of broadband local loop cost per subscriber are overviewed to show the importance of minimizing cable installation costs with the possibility of sharing installation route with power line cables.
Three types of basic topologies for cable installation routes are defined for this study. A formula for minimizing total route length is investigated for these basic topologies.
Modifications of topologies mentioned above are studied for simulating practical networks more closely where underground, buried and aerial installations, as well as combined use of them are taken into consideration. Usefulness of such modifications is shown by numerical examples.

This paper proposes new identification schemes with neural networks for a Hammerstein system which consists of a nonlinear memoryless element followed by a linear dynamical subsystem. The nonlinear element are approximated by the artificial neural networks and the linear subsystem is expressed by the transfer function model. The connection coefficients and thresholds of the neural networks and the parameters of the linear subsystem are estimated by the renewal back-propagation method. The structure of neural networks and the order of the linear subsystem are selected by the minimum description length criterion. It is demonstrated in digital simulation that the proposed identification technique is efficient for the system with various types of nonlinearities.

We propose a novel neuron model named Volterra type neo fuzzy neuron (VNFN) model, which is an extension of a conventional neo fuzzy neuron (NFN) model employing the framework of the Volterra series. The VNFN has cross-correlated inputs and is suitable for describing the function which has a correlation among its inputs, such as an exclusive-OR. Furthermore, this neuron model guarantees the convergence to the global minimum in the leaning process as well as a conventional neo fuzzy neuron.
The attempt was made to apply this VNFN model to describing the inputs-output characteristics of a function which a conventional NFN model can't describe well. And, it was applied to the modeling and prediction problems of a chaotic time series and a continuous-stirred tank reactor (CSTR) plant.

This paper presents a time-frequency distribution which is suitable for a signal analysis. It is difficult to obtain a high resolution in both time and frequency domains in the time-frequency analysis of the signal. However, the multiple short-time Fourier transform (NISTFT) is proposed as a means which obtains high resolution in both time and frequency domains. Further, it is extended to achieve higher resolution signal analysis using multiple expression of the MSTFT. The diagnosis of rotating condition of the pumps is attempted with driving sound using several expressions of time-frequency distributions based on the MSTFT.
