The addition of Ar, O
2 and He buffers resulted in a great increase of the NH
3 laser energy and the number of NH
3 emission lines similar to N
2 buffer gas, when pumped optically by a 9R (30) line of a TEA CO
2 laser. The output pulse shapes and the NH
3 partial pressures were almost identical with all buffer gases under individual optimum condition. In terms of pump energy absorption, conversion efficiency and output wavelength among various buffer gases, the effects of buffer gases are discussed.
