    A switched reluctance (SR) motor has a doubly salient pole structure. The performance of the SR motor strongly depends on the magnetic properties of the core material since it consists only of an iron core and copper windings. This study experimentally evaluates the performance of an SR motor made of permendur (Fe-49%Co alloy), which has very high saturation flux density and low core loss. Two types of SR motors that have the same dimensions but different core materials are used: one motor is made of the conventional non-oriented Si steel, and the other is made of permendur. Comparison of the characteristics of the two motors shows that the performance of the permendur SR motor surpasses that of the conventional one in terms of output power and efficiency.

    This paper describes the application of VSC-HVDC (High Voltage DC Transmission using Voltage Source Converter) with shunt connected SMES (Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage) for compensation of power fluctuation caused by fluctuating power source such as photovoltaics and wind turbines. The objectives of this proposed system is to smooth out fluctuating power in one terminal side of HVDC in order to avoid causing power system instability and frequency deviation by absorbing or providing power according to the system requirement while another terminal side power is fluctuated. The shunt connected SMES charges and discharges the energy to and from the dc side and it compensates required power of fluctuation to obtain constant power flow in one terminal side of VSC-HVDC system. This system configuration has ability for power system stabilization in the case of power fluctuation from natural energy source. PSCAD/EMTDC simulation is used to evaluate the performance of applied system configuration and control method.

    Vibration control of a two-mass resonant system such as a rolling machine is an important problem in industrial applications, because vibration causes a decrease in task accuracy and the destruction of materials. Taking this into the accounts, state feedback control, H control, and resonant ratio control based on a lumped parameter system have been researched for the vibration suppression of a system with a flexible mechanism. On the other hand, methods in distributed parameter model need a lot of calculation in time domain design.
    In this paper, by considering the distributed parameter system in the Laplace domain, a compensator based on a wave equation is proposed. In addition, a two-mass resonant system is controlled using the proposed compensator. The proposed control system with the wave compensator has a simple structure. Therefore, it is easy to set the control parameters in the proposed control system. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by experimental results for a two-mass resonant system.

    The demand for small-sized and high-acceleration linear motors for industrial machines such as semiconductor production equipment and LCD equipment is rapidly increasing in order to maintain the small size of these equipment and to increase productivity. To satisfy the demand, high-force-density (i.e., force per volume) linear motors are required. This paper discusses the development of a high-force-density iron-core linear synchronous motor that consists of a Halbach magnet array with soft magnetic material and a grain-oriented silicon steel sheet core; the motor has a shape-optimized design. The motor constant square density of the new linear motor reaches 10N2/W/cm3, while that of the highest force linear motor available at present is 5N2/W/cm3. In other words, the new motor can deliver a force of 900N per 1000cm3. In this paper, details of the design, especially the structure and performance of the new motor are presented, and the design is validated on the basis of measurements of a prototype motor.

    Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is a useful tool for performing subsurface imaging by using radar pulses. In previous paper, we proposed a method for denoising GPR signals by using 2D Gabor wavelet transforms. In this paper, we present a new method for emphasizing GPR reflected waves from buried objects. We can evaluate the results of the time-frequency analysis of the reflection waves on the basis of the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) and the Infinite Gaussian Mixture Model (IGMM) methods. Our proposed methods are effective as pre-processing method for detecting the positions of buried metal pipes.

    Most low-speed rotating equipments are large and important. Therefore, a plant will suffer substantial losses if the operation of such equipments stops because of any damage to their rolling-element bearings. This paper discusses a diagnostic method for rolling-element bearings in rotating equipments with extremely low speeds of 100rpm or less and further, it proposes a diagnostic method based on acoustic emission (AE) envelope waveform of 100kHz to 1MHz frequency. Abnormality diagnosis was performed even for a rotation number of 1rpm by improving the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio by carrying out further amplification after envelope waveform processing and AE waveform amplification. Furthermore, a method for removing electric noises and an abnormality-diagnosis method based on an event-counting method in the case of extremely low-speed rotation are proposed. Further, we are manufacturing a diagnostic instrument based on this diagnostic method, and we are performing abnormality diagnosis and monitoring of on-site conditions.

    Recently, high-switching-frequency and high-di/dt switching operation of inverters has been studied for the purpose of finding a way to reduce the size and weight of LC filters. In power electronic circuits, the stray inductance of the bus bar between a DC capacitor and power devices may cause an overshoot voltage and electromagnetic interference (EMI) noise for high-di/dt switching operation. Therefore, it is necessary to design the bus bar structure while considering the minimization and optimization of the bus bar inductance value. Generally, the bus bar inductance is analyzed by using 3D finite element method (FEM), but it takes a long time to construct analytical models and to perform the analysis. This paper proposes an improved calculation method for a medium-voltage inverter, based on the partial inductance calculation method. In addition, the wiring structure is designed by considering the stray inductance with using an inductance-mapping method.
