    To meet the global warming, renewable energy sources like wind, solar and biomass generations are dramatically increasing. Cogeneration systems are also ever-growing to save consumers' energy costs among factories, buildings and homes where lots of thermal loads are expected. According to these dispersed generators growth, their negative impacts to commercial power systems quality become non-negligible, because their unstable output causes network voltage and frequency fluctuation. Micro-grid technology comes to the front to solve the problem and many demonstrative field tests are now going all over the world. This paper presents the control paradigm and its application to Hachinohe micro-gird project, especially focusing on the power quality at isolated operation on which strict condition is imposed.

    In a future distribution network, it is difficult to maintain system voltage because a large number of distributed generators are introduced to the system. The authors have proposed “voltage profile control method” using power factor control of distributed generators in the previous work. In the case the all information of the system is available, an ideal stationary solution of control orders to distributed generators is given by an optimization calculation. However, it is difficult to apply the ‘optimization control’ in real time because a long calculation time is required for the optimization. Therefore, it is possible that the voltage change occurs before the power factor control has finished. Thus, in this paper, we develop a new control method which can save the excessive voltage changes considering the controlled response time of distributed generators. The proposed method is tested in a 24-node distribution network model.

    Frequency Response Analysis (FRA) is capable of detecting troubles of transformers, such as deformation of winding, displacement of winding and deformation of iron core, by detecting change of transfer function. However, interpretation of the change with reference to the trouble is not clear. In this paper, an identification method of the troubles are proposed based on investigation using a model transformer. Furthermore, proposed method is applied to a real transformer to identify trouble caused by short-circuit tests. The identification agrees with the result of dismantling investigation.

    In recent years, compact size gas insulated switchgear (GIS) has been developed from rationalization of specifications. All of the GISs have been checked to pass the AC and lightning impulse (LI) withstand test, however, DC stress that occurs on the AC GIS spacer when switching devices are operated has not investigated enough. Since electrical field strength for inside of GIS tank is more strengthen for compact size GIS than ever, it is more necessary to evaluate the withstand performance for GIS spacer under residual DC voltage. Under the DC stress, the electrification of charges strengthen the electrical field strength at creepage surface (Et) and withstand performance for GIS spacer depends on the maximum value of Et (Etmax). When volume resistivities at surface layer of spacer are uneven, Et strengthen at the uneven spot. In this paper, Etmax under DC stress with uneven volume resistivities at surface layer of spacer is investigated, moreover, the evaluation test method for withstand performance under residual DC charge are constructed and proposed.

    As the power system deregulation advances, the competition among the power companies becomes heated, and they seek more efficient system planning using existing facilities. Therefore, an efficient system planning method has been expected. This paper proposes a quantitative evaluation method for the (N-1) generation margin considering the overload and the voltage stability restriction. Concerning the generation margin related with the overload, a fast solution method without the recalculation of the (N-1) Y-matrix is proposed. Referred to the voltage stability, this paper proposes an efficient method to search the stability limit. The IEEE30 model system which is composed of 6 generators and 14 load nodes is employed to validate the proposed method. According to the results, the proposed method can reduce the computational cost for the generation margin related with the overload under the (N-1) condition, and specify the value quantitatively.

    This paper proposes a new technique for determining of state values in power systems. Recently, it is useful for carrying out state estimation with data of PMU (Phasor Measurement Unit). The authors have developed a method for determining state values with artificial neural network (ANN) considering topology observability in power systems. ANN has advantage to approximate nonlinear functions with high precision. The method evaluates pseudo-measurement state values of the data which are lost in power systems. The method is successfully applied to the IEEE 14-bus system.

    To clarify the effect of carbides on current chopping characteristics chopping current was evaluated for various metalcarbide contact materials. As a result, it was found that the chopping current of metal-carbide contacts was related to the vapor pressure of metals and the work function of carbides. It was also found that the chopping current was reduced by the heat treatment when the melting point of contacts is lower than the temperature of heat teatment.

    The power generation characteristics of a disk magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) generator with high temperature inert gas (argon) plasma have been examined by a time-dependent two-dimensional numerical simulation. The numerical simulation results based on the experimental conditions show that the enthalpy extraction ratio (= electrical output power/thermal input) can reach above 10%, which surely supports the reasonability of experimental result. Proper selection of working conditions, especially the inlet total gas temperature is necessary, since the gas temperature dominantly determines the electrical conductivity in the generator, unlike the conventional seeded plasma MHD generator. It is also found that the plasma is not in the recombination process but in the ionization process, where the ionization degree moderately increases along the flow.
