Medical libraries in past could enjoy a fairly steady growth and also a confidence in their capability to meet the most needs of their users. But, this comfortable situation is rapidly fading into an uncertain but somewhat dynamic environment. There are two major factors that cause this change. One is a social trend to make health and medical information available to much more larger population than those of physicians, such as, para-medical people, patients, and even to general public. Another is, of course, the development of new technologies represented by computer application to library and information service.
In Japan, the former factor is not so explicitly observed yet, however, the latter is recently getting to be an urgent one.
There are two entirely different attitudes we can choose to take in coping with this change of environment. We may stick to our traditional role of a custodian of book collection, and let other new-comers in our field of information transfer, such as the university computer center, to take over our job as the major information service unit in health and medical fields. Or, we may struggle to remodel ourselves to be able to fit better in the new role as much more active and dynamic information agent that will be needed in this new health and medical environment.
And if we choose the latter way, then, it would be necessary for us to fortify ourselves by acquiring more of medical knowledge so that we can be admitted as one of the true members of health care team.

In April, 1979, the 20th General Assembly of the Japan Medical Congress was held in Tokyo. The Assembly had about 120 scientific lectures and symposiums in which medical doctors and other health professionals participated from all over the country.
In addition to those meetings, the General Medical Exhibition was arranged and various programs were provided such as research progresses, medical instruments, pharmaceutical drugs, and information/communication systems.
“Dynamics of Medical Information Services in Future” was shown at a greater part of the Exhibition Place.
Presented there were the Japan Information Center of Science and Technology's on-line information system (JOTS), and the Lockheed Information Service (DIALOG) and the System Development Corporation's Search Service through international telephone-lines. As useful devices of inter-library loan service, telexes and tele-facsimiles are demonstrated.
Our Committee of Medical Information/Communication Systems suggested a future net-work of delivery of medical information at the nation-wide level, including a plan of a national medical library and information center.
In commemoration of the Assembly, a 130-page book “How to find out medical literature (Igaku Bunken no Sagashikata)” was published.

This paper is a report on Dr. Jundo Omura, who lived in Awa Tokushima (the Shikoku district of Japan) from the end of the Edo to the middle of the Meiji period and belonged to Hoashi Banri mon (the blending school of Chinese and Dutch medicine). There is no biographical facts about him, even the dates of his birth and death unknown. Therefore, the author introduces Jundo through his two sons Jun-an and Hidemaro in addition to his collection and works donated to the Nippon Medical School Library and describes the life pattern of medical doctors lived far from the capital city Edo in those days.
