Two years have already passed since the “3M Book Detection System” developed by 3M, USA, was installed in our library in September 1977. An inventory taken twice during the two years has proved that the Detection System is effective to prevent books from being removed improperly. The following is a summary report of the results of the Detection System introduced.
Inventories have shown considerable differences in book loss or missing before and after the Detection System was installed. The device has almost eliminated patrons' unpleasant experience due to book missing or loss. This fact is very significant in terms of library management and welcome to librarians to treat patrons. The Detection System installed has produced great effects, ripple effects, in reducing book losses.
What's more important, it has not caused less library utilization, service decrease, trouble with patrons, or hurt to good atmosphere prevailed in the library.
On the other hand, equipment fool has been experienced for only two years after the Detection System was installed, and our concern is about equipment overhall to be made, after-sale service, etc. The great effect of control by the Detection System may be well evaluated in terms of both library asset management and service to patrons.
