In 1973, concurrently with the foundation of the Asahikawa Medical College, the Library was established and started its services. In 1978, it moved to the new building.
Since its establishment, the Library has been making efforts mainly to collect foreign primary journals, and has been able to obtain the expected results.
Besides the commonly provided services like Contents Sheet Service, the Library has been publishing monthly Bulletin, started the JICST on-line information retrieval service, installed Telex for interlibrary loan and computerized purchasing system of foreign journals.
In 1980, the Library reclassified its collection of biomedical books from the Nippon Decimal Classification to the National Library of Medicine Classification.
In 1973, the Library collection consisted of only 11, 919 volumes. By March 1980, it had grown to 55, 778 volumes of books and bound journals and about 800 foreign journals are currently acquired.
So far the Library has had to concentrate its efforts on collecting and organizing library materials, which is the major problem a newly-established library has to face. Now having built a considerable size of collection, the Library has to make a next step. Extension and improvement of services, contribution to community medicine as a medical information center, and participation in an academic information system in the future are each and all important problems for the Library.
